Phoenix City - Farewell

If Berisha spent less time trying to tell the referee how to run the game and more time concentrating on his shooting, he'd have scored 30 goals this season.

Berisha is to football is what Sean Fitzpatrick was to rugby. The second referee on the field.

The rolling around "I have been shot by a 50 Cal rifle" when tackled is exactly what is wrong with the game and is exactly what puts neutral fans off the game. It is hurting it more than some realise.

I am not against charactors in the game but just so long as it is not detrimental to the game and its image.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I don't have any issue with Berisha lying on the ground after the Siggy challenge. He got elbowed in the head. That actually hurts.

What has irked me is how he's come out to the media acting like a scorned puppy dog while slandering another player just to get off his ban.

I agree on both points. I get frustrated with players crowding the ref and harassing him, whether it is over a decision or someone injured.

We could learn a lot from rugby there actually. You don't see this sort of nonsense there.

Only because Refs give yellow cards for arguing with them (Or march them 10yds), it is something I love about rugby, but think fans wouldn't have it in Football and it really frustrates me. :(

he wasn't though, he was rolling around vigorously rubbing the area where be was hit and glancing at the ref to see if he was watching. He wasn't behaving like someone who was injured until the dr was on the scene giving the concussion test. Presumably because the Dr told him to lie still. If he was injured he wouldn't be trying to play it up.

Actually I think you'll be surprised if you take another look at rugby a couple years from now.

Just now in the media they are starting to talk about the length of games - some games have stretched past 2 hours this season due to extensive injury breaks and mucking about between set plays. Injury breaks are not regulated in rugby, so they're starting to see players stay down to give teammates a breather if the pace of the opposition is too high. And players are starting to flop or exaggerate contact to influence the referee.

What we're seeing is what football has already been through a long long time ago. And just like you hear the english 'pundits' etc claim that foreigners bring it into the game, I heard the NZ commentators claiming the Argentinians are bringing it into Super Rugby.

With professionalism comes professional fouls, exaggeration, and just generally more cheating. When there's money and winning at stake, morals go out the window.

Professional rugby is very new, this will get worse and worse if the rugby administrators don't start trying to deal with it now.

It's not really up to you or other players to judge whether he was actually concussed or not - that's up to the doctor. He got elbowed in the back of the head - that is a fact - and it's a fact that it could possibly cause concussion.

Yes an elbow hit him in the back of the head but every person in the ground, and those watching on TV, could see that he was not concussed. The fact is, he is a fudgeing good striker, but as an actor....meh

It was nice to see in the replays he did turn to check a player was attaching the ball and then turned back to back into them and half leap  :-)

The latest episode of Phoenix City is out now!

Three of the lads are recovering from the Phoenix awards night, but Frostie wasn't invited so he provides most of the analysis of the Phoenix's final game of the season.

It's farewell to Siggy and Manny, Berisha is still a c**k and the TeeDubs are getting the job done in the Champions League.

If he wasn't alternating between rubbing his head vigorously and checking to make sure the ref was looking I would feel sympathy for him. He was treating it like he had an insect bite and it was itchy, not as though it was a pain from being struck with a possible concussion. It was clear he was looking for a reaction from the ref and was completely haming it up.

He said he was dizzy, yet played for the rest of the game. He said his head hurt for several days afterwards, yet he was on a plane the next day to play in the ACL, he also said that Durante chocked him to the extent that he couldn't talk to the doctor, where no video footage that I've seen supports that, and no testimonial from anyone that was there from what has been said backs this up. In fact, despite the videos and photos, and the fact that the ref, the dr, and other players were all in close proximity the MRP has said that they could not prove that he was chocked...

Berisha does not get the benefit of the doubt.

What happened after and how he reacted is completely irrelevant in terms of how he was medically treated. You can have a concussion and still react like a Twit. It's not up to you, nor is it up to the players, to determine whether he is concussed or not. Any head knock needs to be treated with the utmost caution; it's not out of the realms of possibility that an elbow to the back of the head could cause serious neurological damage. (though some may say Berisha has this already)

Personally I think Dura standing over him was a dick move, but Berisha coming out afterwards like he did trumped him in terms of dickishness.

of course it should have been treated and Durante shouldn't be have been there, doesn't excuse Berisha kicking or lying to a tribunal.

Remember when it was the final, it was 1-1 deep in injury time and with no players around him he fell while trying to kick the ball. He claimed a penalty and won the title be cheating.

Instead of reducing the ban I would have liked to see the ffa increase it for lying. And bans and fines retrospectively introduced for clear diving that gets through. He is a terrible sportsman and needs to know he can't get away with that behavior, but instead of condemning him the FFA reinforces him. So treat him on the pitch, give Durante his yellow and Berisha his ban. Durante shouldn't have have been there but you can't blame him for thinking Berisha was play acting.

If someone in another sport was such a persistent cheat wouldn't this sorts do something about it?

Patrick takes a break from the pod, so it's one of our best episodes yet as a result. Hamish Watson gives us something to talk about that's relevant to the Nix, the pod rejoice in the tears of Besart Berisha and the TeeDubs are flying high at the OCL.

A few ideas for awards

Best travelling fans to the RoF  (the RBB were good value, Perth and Adelaide also traveled in numbers)

Best flag/Banner (the Siggy and Manny one was class, also enjoyed 99 problems, T's and C's apply, and I don't speak for everyone, but #Martinout)

Best banter at an opposition player (does your sister pay your bills, booing Jade North, Berisha getting a send off)

Best podcast guest/interview (Calcott, Dome, Keogh, the travelling fans from Perth, Lia, Greenie)

Most podcast violations

Most disappointing signing (certainly Sarpong, Alex Jones (not his fault))

Miss of the season

the Junior82 award for the player who went missing towards the end of the season (McG)

Best chant

Why I love the ASBP moment of the season

Goal celebration of the season (James Musa)

I think we're being too lofty in the ideas for the awards, in the spirit of awards for participation we should have awards that even Phoenix players can win.

  • Best backwards pass.
  • Best goal that the opposition scored from our own attacking opportunity or set piece.
  • Best spell of possession in our own half.
  • Best aim from a set piece (by best aim I mean most accurately aiming for the goal keepers open hands)
  • Best yellow card.
  • Best build up play that would have resulted in a goal if our strikers were in position.
  • Narrowest formation.
