Young Kiwi Strikers:De Vries - a wide playerBevin - Lacks pace for that level and is more of a poacher like GreenacreLucas - lacks sizeLovemore - not really a striker as such and more of a free range attacking player (think Ifill but less on the ball)Name other young Kiwi strikers (of which I am sure there are some) that would fit in that list. They should at least be in the Premiership because if they are not at that level, chances are high they are not good enough and if they are overseas, chances are high they may not come back to play here. The list may not be much longer. Is the turtle kid any better? Who knows.
how much have you seen of Andy Bevin exactly? Your description of him is quite far off the mark. I've seen you claim he is slow on here before, just wondering where you got that info from. Also he's not a 'poacher' type striker, more often than not he creates chances for himself and finishes them from unlikely positions. That's my observations of seeing him play over the past 18 months anyway.
Jeff you can say I'm wrong all you like, it doesn't worry me. Your opinion doesn't particularly sit very highly with me given that two certain ex-nix coaches both told me at an NZFC game at Newtown Park last summer, that they rated him very highly. So I'll probably go with what they reckon but cheers.

Im thinking that player kit release could be linked with a player signing....
Because i know for a fact that Sydney are holding off kit release untill Kewell negotions have finished for the good or the bad..

Now you have made some points I can actually agree with however to say 'ex-so and so said this and that' well thats speculation until you name names. I could easily say the same in reverse. Doesn't make my point anymore factual than yours. You've been around here long enough to know this so lets not even go there.
I think that you can not compare any player in the NYL because any player that has an element of quality makes it look like men vs the boys because there are a lot of kids at the level that are not strong footballers so anyone that has talent will stand out instantly. I don't deny that he certainly does put away his chances and I would be interesting in his conversion rate because it would be high. He is far better than Cain and Galbraith (incidentally how the hell did he get picked other than for his height) but I would not put him ahead of Lovemore. Then again I don't think they play the same position really so its not a relevant comparison. Bevin is a striker, Lovemore is not so much and sits better as an attacking wide man that drifts in. He has to have some talent because he did score goals in the premiership. While he does score goals, we fundamentally disagree how he gets them. I just don't think he has the pace for the A League and he more like a Greenacre (a poacher)

Lots of people have probably seen more of Lovemore playing than me.....but you have to admit his cameo against Sydeny for the Nix last season suggested he has some attributes that could make him an effective player in the A-League. He's got pace, for a start and is direct.
I would be happy for him to get a youth spot at the Nix. Maybe he might develop into something special in the pro environment. Certainly training with and being guided by Ifill and Greenie would help him develop. He looks a good footballer....he just needs some rough edges smoothed out.

Yeah I agree zinidane. I again harp back to Siggy. Its taken him two years to hold his natural spot and he was one of the better players in the NZFC. Also look at his body shape now compared to previously where he could not last a game with cramps. Granted Lovemore is young fit and quick but a year in that environment with specialised programmes would do him the world of good. Look at the shape of Musa now compared to when he was signed. It seems odd to invest in that and then not re-sign him (unless it was attitude or just not good enough)

Sorry but I'm with Top Left here, I've seen a lot of Bevin at high school, NZY and NZFC level and a poacher he is not. He takes all sorts of chances and usually converts but without any stats to back this up, I'd say he does a fair bit of work to score most of his goals. As to speed, at NZFC level he doesn't seem to be lacking speed at all. I'm quite impressed with him.

Does anyone have any actual insite on Musa? Was he not up to the grade or is it simply that we can't afford financially to carry players who might be ready in 2 years but aren't right now?
Normo's coming home

With Musa I suspect it will be his distribution. It's a pity his only game at CB had him paired with North who had a shocker. I think he has most of the characteristics he needs to play at that level and will improve quite a bit. U20 world cup will give him a chance to pick something up if he plays well.

TBF to Musa I think he's a great kid, but Ricki must be waiting for the U20's to determine what spots he fills.
He was also a "Gouldie" spotting and signing so that could be playing a fact.
Ultimately he's also a bit liable for peno's, and was very lucky against the Cameroon's not to give away a 2nd penalty!

I would be happy to bring Stefan Marinovic in as the second keeper. But is he going to want to come home?
Andy Bevin and Ryan Cain impressed me again today and I think Nick Branch is the best defender at the World Cup for us. Dakota Lucas could also be up to it.
Not interested in Luke Rowe or Andrew Milne and yet to be convinced by Sean Lovemore. Yes he's fast but he's got a poor touch and is a poor finisher (from the two opportunities I've seen)

Third keeper. We need a genuine number 1 to cover the perpetually borked Pasty, then Marinovic in the Crowther role. Sort of number2 except when Pasty is fit for a couple of games.

Admittedly, haven't seen all that much of Bevin and Lovemore (a few NZFC games, U20s), but from what I've seen, Bevin > Lovemore, and significantly so.
Marinovic has done well so far - thought he made some excellent saves today, but he still looks very shaky in the air and with high balls in the box, and seemed to have more trouble holding relatively straightforward shots as the game went on today - physical or mental fatigue? Nerves? Not sure, but something he needs to improve on. But overall he's done well, he's still young and has plenty of time to work on these things.el grapadura2011-08-03 13:03:57

..and if he's not?
Look, the lad can fling himself around and stop a shot but he doesn't hold much after he's saved it and he's more scared of Crosses than the cast of the Vampire Diaries.
Sure, offer him a spot but we still need a starting keeper. If Marinovic signed and forced him out all good but to rely on him week in and wek out? HUGE call.

What is the word on Paston? Were they freak injuries? Likely to recur? I'm tempted to say lets just take a chance on him as the number one keeper and if he does pick up another injury scramble to replace as we have done so in the last couple of seasons.
He's had two season-ending injuries in the last two seasons, and he's turning 35 this year.
So it's not exactly an ideal track record from both the club's and the player's perspective.

oooh really??? wow that's surprise - not.
All I meant was that our style of play is hardly ball to feet.
Frankie Mac - yeah of course he's settled in the UK - and good on him. I was just ondering why would someone want to play 3rd tier football when they could be playing 1st tier. but I guess I would have to ask him

Haven't they both been contact injuries? (not completely unusual for a keeper - esp in A-League, with the refs)
so unless he's got osteo-porosis or a really dodgy technique for coming out for the ball then it's just bad luck (which ...'logically' has to even out sooner or later)

Old injuries being the perfect breeding ground for recurring/aggravating/new injuries and all that.
And at that age, I guess both the club and the player may well ask themselves if it's really worth it.

If I were Ricki I'd be seriously looking at players such as Ryan Cain and perhaps even Lucas Dakota. There's definately some talent in this current NZ U20 all whites team.
