In my view much more difficult path, but more rewarding. One need to be a bit lucky to get the scholarship with one of the top 50-60 colleges. If the college is 100+ it means it has very slim chances of qualifying to the final (state) competition, and the chances for individual players to be notices aren't very high. The regular season lasts only three or four months and after end of the season boys can play for a local club.

Agree with HN, playing ASB can't be compared with a chance of gaining a good (free) education + lifetime overseas experience, and half-decent chance to play MSL.

What would Andy Bevin do if he stayed in NZ? Most likely play for HB and study in NZ.

I would say no to Boyens because as someone else said, he is quite nervy. Everytime I have seen him, he has hardly inspired me with confidence in his ability. Yeah he had that game against Wales, but what else has he done? No tvery much.

Sean Lovemore has talent no doubt but he is a 20min footballer. He can't even start for the one of the top sides in the Premiership. That miss in Colombia was just a scratch on the surface of some other stuff underneath. I used to think he was pretty sharp and watching him in his cameo at the Phoenix, he did well but he hasn't done much since at the top domestic league. Not a bad looking missus though...

People said the same about Smeltzy before he arrived... just saying.

If we have to have one, I'd prefer the Kiwi myself.

But the Aussie fills a mandatory youth spot.

Somewhat irrelevant.
If we sign everyone that's rubbish in the hope they will become the next Smeltz for the nix, well..

I know, it was the Wales game reference is all, Boyens would not overtake Siggy IMO.

Same here, when players are of the same ability/age/experience then we take the kiwi everytime. The Australian and import spots are for the next level players up

George Slefendorfas must be worth a look for next season if he keeps up his lead scorer in the asb prem. doesnt count as an import which is always a winner

Can anyone confirm any of the talk of Chris Killen not being happy at Shenzen that was mentioned by the commentators tonight? I had this funny feeling they had just been reading our threads here..

maybe, I was suprised to hear the commentators talking about Killen...if it's for real then we need to be on the phone to his agent and get him out here!

I also had a feeling that they were just repeating rumours from the forums here

Only references I can find in the Chinese interweb are to the Herald article.

Probably need someone with weibo to get any more rumour.

I hear Auckland city are interested in signing Sanchez. He's tempted By a move home.

Allegedly

I really hope that when we actually get a full staff including a proper assitant for Ricky that he is actively involved in player recruitment

Auckland will rise once more

Haha I guess relegation would actually be better for his chances.

Yeah, surely he ticks a lot of boxes and is worth the investment.

Dont think we can offer him a maid and a driver...

I dont think cash is an issue Stefan. I think the main issue is whether Ricki and Gareth and co think he's worth what he's being paid in china. Obviously we will have to match that at least. I don't know what the salaries are like in china but if they are higher than here he could end up being our highest paid player, that's where they have to consider whether he's worth using that much of the cap on. I don't think he's marqee material.

Fuck this stupid game

I doubt we have to match what he is on in China, he has basically come out and said the ONLY reason he is there is the money, but it will at least have to be competitive. But agree with the fact you can't really afford to overspend, Killen is good, I think he would fit in nicely and be quite marketable, but he is not going to be a super star. rjmiller2011-12-08 10:51:51

He is absolutely marquee material - returning international player. Especially if either
(a) We are not looking at buying an actual marquee (which seems the case) OR
(b) As a Kiwi he is able to count as the domestic marquee (not sure of this as he may have to be an Aussie to count?)

Apparently he should count as an aussie marquee, as the wording in the rules is that for the nix, kiwis are regarded as australians.

I think he fits the bill, but is definitely not the long term solution. I think we need him as soon as we can, and before hes no good.

Would be a good signing IMO. He is the type of player that would suit the Nix style. Would be far superior to Dmac.  Can see why he would want to come back....playing Div 2 in China would be a miserable existence except for the maid and the driver(and the money).

I am sure we can find someone to drive him around Wellington.....he can borrow my old Datsun....

Doloras, what do you look like in a maids outfit? Come on, be a sport!!! do it for the Team.

If we did get him at least we could use it as a marketing tool to try and get some media buzz and drag a few more punters to the games

Forget your Datsun.

He can use the Fever Mobile.  Mercedes much more classy.  Fever Scholarship winner as driver.

How's my driving? - Whine here

Use D as a marketing tool?

Would certainly appeal to all the goalkeepers... (esp those with initials DV)

Edit: Someone do some mock up posters please?

+1 If we can afford him, then he would be a great signing.  I wouldn't want the club to bankrupt itself to get him, but I think he would justify a marquee salary.

From that article I don't think he'll be coming back for a couple of years yet.

Would be great to see though - think he'd fit into the team very well.valeo2011-12-08 13:04:00

all really depends on two factors, club in china's desire to get back to top division and the $$ the nix may/may not offer. The time is right nix management, dig deep, get him here as the aussie marquee on a two year deal...at 30 he'd be the exact thing we need, experienced, respected and decent in front of goal.

Listening to Gareth Morgan on the latest poddy, I'd say pretty unlikely that Killen gets an offer from us he'd be happy with.
