in the nix's defense, Sutton may get overseas offers as a free agent but there won't be any that would have been willing to pay a significant fee for him. He simply has not been consistent enough for that. Isn't a baby either at 23. The only player we have who might feasibly go for a decent fee in the foreseeable future is Hughes. If he has a decent year next year and the Nix have a good season I could easily see it happening. Maybe LBS too but that'd be a couple years away at least. AucklandPhoenix
The craziest thing is the one kiwi who could actually receive an offshore offer in the next year (Sutton) is out of contract this year.
So whoever is in charge of this stuff (Dome, I imagine) should explain why this has occured.
Has the club itself ever said anything about it being hard to attract players to NZ? i always thought it was just people in the forum. I never believed it, players play in all sorts of dubious places.Nommag
If the club only wants to develop players to sell and chief is giving young ac demy players game time then they will probably stick with him. The only reason the club are silent is because all their excuses like travel, not being able to attract better players to live in NZ etc have been completely undermind by Auckland. We know they don't care about winning, they know we know they don't care about winning so why carry on with the illusion. Jokes on us I guess, we get to support an academy team.
Yes. On multiple occasions like it was a given iirc.

Has been mentioned a few times over the years that there have been issues. Not just attracting them its also keeping them here when their contracts have finished have been a number over the years who have preferred to move on

Sutton has carried us twice when we were sharke. He was having an incredible spell of form and then was seconded to CM by Talay, as was that Mexican lad.
And then this season with Payne out and no other play makers he was the only player carrying the ball forward.
If he’d had the support on his career path others have had we’d have sold him earlier. Similarly with Sail. He was an amazing keeper who was given the captaincy and that, along with his defensive partnership with Tim Payne, caused him problems where he hadn’t had any before.
A bit of a warning for us moving players around different positions when they haven’t finished learning one yet.
The interesting question for me is who would be better between him and McGarry. McGarry has had the benefit of at least one great coach at CCM who found a way to maximize his output, and has been away from the Nix twice. Sutton has stuck with the Nix. Maybe Sutton has a higher ceiling, but McGarry has had the better career experience so far surely.
“No more Dome and Gloom. Let’s make football fun again!!”
Not sure if I agree about Dome and management being the culprits here. They may have not always got everything right but it must be an unthankful job running and financing a football club in this part of the world. I'm happy there are people here who are capable, enthusiastic and have pockets deep enough to do it. Don't think there are many of those in NZ. Don't bite the hand that feeds you as they say. Chiefy on the other hand is another matter. Although on a personal level I like him and no one should be sacked from their job easily, might be time for him to get more caching experience elsewhere. He can always come back down the track.
Very long time lurker... Did some math I wanted to share. In the past 10 fixtures we have averaged 2.4 shots on target per game. (or 7.4 shots overall). Ironically the most shots on target was when we were in Wellington vs Brisbane ending in a 1-1 draw (6 shots on target) second most was the most recent game against Auckland FC where we had 5 shots on target...
Having only one shot on target against Western United - coming after we were already 4-0 down is a tough pill to swallow. Having more NZ eyes than ever on the A-League this season, and serving up what can only be described as bit shark and boring football is disappointing.

If I was Dome, I'd be calling in senior Kiwi players Barba, Payne & Rufer for a little meeting this week. They will all be off on AWs duty next week.
Get their open confidential views on what is going wrong, what needs to be done, Chiefy as a coach etc etc.
Then after the Sydney game this weekend, the Nix have a 2 week break. So once Chiefy is back from Sydney he sits down with Dome (maybe Rob Morrison as well), and Italiano needs to build a case why he should stay on as coach. What's going to happen to turn this shipwreck around.
Don't know if Kosta should be included in this, he's out of contract and may be already out the door in his mind. Hughes instead maybe, as representative of the many kids on longer deals coochiee

Kosta has said he intends to retire here, so unless there is a massive offer from AFC or one of the Aussie clubs I cant see him leaving.
did he really? Source/citation please. Even if he wants to do so, would be foolish to say so and take away potential leverage in contract negotiations theprof

It was a comment he made when he signed for us, cant remember where it was recorded,.

Kosta has been a bit shark the last few weeks. Some of his passing at Western U was awful. No doubt he's getting very frustrated, but he's perhaps in danger of reverting to his unimpressive form & stats of ALM seasons 21/22 and 22/23.
At 35, and being a visa player I'd say his other ALM club options are limited. It would be a surprise to see him leave the Nix now.
There is precedent of him looking at the state of the Nix and saying, yep I'm better than this, I can't be wasting my playing days here. every chance he does it again, especially given he has so few of those left now. i'm expecting him to leave at this point and would be pleasantly surprised if he is to stay
at35, Im not sure he's looking for new challenges except winning a title for the nix! I'd expect the club to act on the available +1yr deal and see him retire end of next season/

Most of the lower table A-league clubs would take Kosta on a 1 year deal, despite his VISA status. That is, if his salary was reasonable.
Depends what you like. I went there last year. The ground's on the outskirts of Melbourne's unfashionable west, surrounded by paddocks (which Tarneit will expand into soon enough). It's got a real grassroots / Saturday afternoon football feel about it, and there's plenty of contact between players and fans. Lots of selfies (my gf, not a football fan, even got one) and goal celebrations with the crowd.
WU were near bottom of the table, but the players and fans showed great spirit. The Service Crew made a lot of noise stamping on the temporary stand. Enjoyable experience, and I left with a WU banner and a bit of a soft spot for the club, especially for their reaction to a bad season.AucklandPhoenix
This is such a hideous ground to watch football at even on TV.
