Wow, I expected the usuals to be here rage baiting away, being as toxic as ever, but not to this point.
Yesterday was clearly better than last week, way more structured with little tweaks to the set up. Unfortunately we conceded a soft goal with defence from weeks prior. Bill again not really marking his man out of play and then Hughes letting the scorer drift free.
Before all that though we certainly had then under pressure for big parts of the fist half. If only Piper was a striker - still not sure why he started over Mileusnic. Had that pen not been overturned! Which was so clearly the incorrect call from VAR, Grant gets away with pushes and shoulders into player every week. On field ref calls pen, there is clearly contact to the back with a shoulder no clear and obvious error! The decision to overrule due to no foul should have resulted in a yellow for diving.

1-0 was disappointing, I felt we could have left with a 1-1 draw. The vitriol here saying the culture is broken and needs a change are bonkers! None of you have likely ever spoken to Dome or anyone in within the club, none of you are in the changing sheds! Hell I doubt any of you even attend the games regularly, given the amount of shark you post during home games.

Adelaide away next, they are 4th, and we are not.

Joshy can hold his head high. He made some nice saves, and there was hardly anything he was gonna do about that goal. Great response after what can only be described as a career-shortening mistake.

I'm not sold on him staying on as keeper next season, but I'd love to see a huge resurgence from him and firmly earn the spot. From everything I've heard, he sounds like a lovely, down-to-earth person, so I hope he does well.

Putting him back further into his box seemed to suit him much better, with his distribution from the back not being bad either, even when under pressure. I noticeably wasn't clenching every time the ball got passed to him.

Also really nice to hear others in the fever getting behind him during the game.
See this is the loser mentality at the club I talk about. 'He is a nice guy so he deserves to get given yet another chance'. People wrote Sail off for worse (who is a better GK IMO). Josh is a National League goalkeeper at best.

I said it about AFC when they had Woud and Matt Sutton was free due to Western United. AFC should have signed Matt Sutton and we should have had a crack.

We need an established GK, not one that has blunder after blunder where the point that you feel safer when AKH is in goal.

EDIT: the fact that six people liked your comments proves why we have not won any trophies in our existence.
Shark your toxic why even bother, its your sort of support football teams dont need. Isnt that the strangest thing a teams fans get behind one of their players to support him never ever heard of that happening before must mean the club are just losers. FFS
I'll add some fuel to the fire lol. First up, I can understand both views. But there's a lot of frustration, the club is rock bottom. 6 derby losses in a row, 2 massive howlers from our #1 import keeper that contributed to those, and currently we're bottom of the table. We can be thankful there's no relegation. Maybe that's the reason why we afford players and coaches who underperform more time than would usually be the case in this business around the world.

Final thought: People on here who are critical of the way things are going at least care enough about the club to engage. What should worry us more is the 1000's who don't even show up anymore and decide to spend their spare time elsewhere.

We played some nice football in small spells, and if Piper buries that 1v1 and the VAR doesn't overturn that penalty decision it could have been a very different result.

We really missed Eze, I don't understand why Kartum didn't see any minutes, I'm not a big fan of Najj, he tends to kill promising attacks for us often.

We are now bottom of the table. Winless in 6. The negativity is warranted, the club is seeing it's lowest crowds and results have been poor for a couple of seasons now. How long is this tenable for?

Every game right now is a final if there's any chance of making the play-offs. Ort avoid the spoon.

I love you negative guys- because you damn well care. It’s well known that the most critical are often those that care most.

And I absolutely agree we should be all in for trophies. But every other club is the same.

So you also do my head in.

At this point in the season it doesn’t look like Greenie is going to be too ambitious and make significant changes. Trophies this season are likely out.

And I also agree sports psychology and mentality are usually highly important. Chief wanted to win like Mark Richardson, with suffocating defense. That’s still winning when it works. There’s all kinds of winners mentality. I’m quite happy to win without sandpapering any balls or getting the new guy to do it.

You’re not wrong that mentality, backed up by fitness, strategy, squad depth and skill is important.

But also negativity constantly, even if you’re right, is no fun. Was impressed with the fever support for Josh last game. We can’t bin off every player that makes a mistake. And outside two games Josh has had some very good games. We didn’t lose 5-0 because of one goal.

Anyway, not much point there, but mentality is important, but elusive. The Jets for example seem to win without Sydney FCing up their foul count. There’s lots of ways to get the job done.

Obviously I hope that the top 6 will is obtained and am willing for the old guard to be wheeled out while that is still a possibility.

If however it reaches a point where it can’t be done, I would want all imports with the exception of Eze dropped, along with all Aussies off contract who are not going to be resigned and the young guys starting, getting ready for next season.

And I agree whilst a top 6 place is still on the cards we have to chase it, no matter how improbable it gets. Once that's gone you may as well give the youth minutes.

Bugga off mate. You couldn't even be bothered to actually read what I wrote. If you did you'd see I wouldn't be keeping him on next season.

But god forbid I praise a good performance from a player and hope they continue to play well for my team.

Only loser here is people like you, who piss and moan constantly, and deride other's for being even slightly positive.

And the fact 2 people liked YOUR comment proves that some people on this forum lack reading comprehension

Anyway positive or negative support my GiveaLittle to send some bravery appreciation to the referees courtesy of the Fever! I haven’t had the go ahead to deposit it into Fever accounts yet so might lose momentum. My pitch below:

Truckload of poo or funnier sent to VAR HQ

Hi,

Passionate Wellington Phoenix fan. The VAR has cancelled a second penalty call against us when it has no business being involved. It compares poorly too, to interventions in the second derby and another recent intervention to give us a penalty that was rejected by the onfield referee.

I’d love to fundraise to send them an Isuzu Ute load of bullcrap or a bag of dicks gummies or some appropriate gesture chosen by someone wiser than me at the YellowFever HQ where I will be sending this money.

No one deserves this more!

Anything extra received could be donated to referee training or education in the Wellington area.

100%, when they're sent to the monitor by another referee, I imagine there's a bit of peer pressure to change your mind.

I liked the trial they rolled out at the U20 World Cup, giving the coaches 2 opportunities to check something with VAR.

Means there's less pressure for the referee to reverse their decision because his colleague heavily implies they should.

Its an absolute joke. He has been bundled over, defender not attempting to play the ball. Contact is not remotely shoulder to shoulder.  Its in his back. And its a bigger joke if the powers that be dont come out and state that the referee should not have overruled his original decision.

It is a textbook foul. Do that on the halfway line and it's a foul everyday. Shouldn't change in the penalty box, ref took 10 years before finally deciding to give it. The fact VAR watched that and said "that's alright" is a travesty

We’ve said this kind of thing over and over again. No more words.

We need to send a #IzuzuUteload ! A sincere and heartfelt review of APL taunting us.

And replying above it’s worse than that 👆. They’ve  gone -it’s clearly and obviously not a foul and 100% of referees would agree.

Therefore logically it either is a penalty or Danaskos is not a referee and the whole game is invalid…

Went with the free tickets yesterday, hadn't actually been to a game for a year or so. Sat in the section to the left of the Sydney fans where the tickets were actually located (though moved a few rows back out of the sun) - can see us in the screenshot of the goal someone posted earlier. In the first half a security guy who could possibly only be described as a jobsworth came and asked two groups (who were not loud and not even in team colours) to move out of the section the Sydney fans were in and go and sit somewhere else as that section was "for the away team."

Seemed a bit ridiculous when there were literally just 5 or 6 guys in Sydney shirts down the front miles away. There was hardly a fight going to break out, and unlikely there were another 100 of them not there yet. Made us laugh anyway.

What was the attendance btw? Missed it being announced. Having not been for a while it felt a smaller crowd than I'd expected, especially with the free tickets.

I get peoples frustration and SOME of the criticism you think im not frustrated and PO with the way things have gone. Well your sadly mistaken if you think that.
What i wont accept is the continual posting of some saying no one wants to win, the club just accepts losing and the constant negativity and in some cases abuse of players coaches and management. I really do wonder why some bother posting they are so negative constanly.
Heres a hint for those negative nancies and its on the front page of the Yellow Fever site.
" We’re the unofficial supporters’ group for the Wellington Phoenix FC"

Supporter : A supporter is someone who's a fan or advocate of a person group or cause.
Fans: A person who has strong interest or admiration for a particular person or thing. "football fans".

Again i love the varied opinions what i dont accept is the false assumptions continually posted about and claims made about staff and management.
I just dont get why if your so dam negative about the club you even bother visiting a site dedicated to Wellington Phoenix supporters.

https://www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2026/03/02/phoenix-coach-chris-greenacre-a-good-platform-to-build-on/

Wellington Phoenix interim head coach Chris Greenacre has explained the thinking behind his team selections for Sunday’s 1-0 men’s A-League loss to Sydney.

For his first game in charge, Greenacre made only one change to his starting line-up, bringing in Corban Piper for leading goal scorer Ifeanyi Eze, who was suspended for the game.

“As an athlete, you know where your levels are, and we had a lot of people within the squad that needed to put things right,” Greenacre said at his post-match briefing.

“I think it was important to give them that chance to do that.

“Overall, I think they did. I think they left everything on the pitch, and it’s a good platform to build on going forward.”

Greenacre also stuck with Josh Oluwayemi in goal despite the ‘keeper having a derby to forget, scoring an own goal in Auckland FC’s 5-0 win.

“I thought he was excellent. Up until yesterday, I wasn’t sure who would start because all the ‘keepers have been terrific.

“Full credit for Eamonn [McCarron] and Alby [Kelly-Heald], they’ve really pushed Josh this week.

“[And] for him to show his resilience after, I’ve not read social media this week but, I can imagine what’s been going around.

“To bounce back like that, I think it shows someone with a lot of steel and a lot of character.”

Ahh there it is.
One c- called Eze a cheat after Woud barged him and then you are calling Nagasawa a diver for getting pushed over by Grant.

This is loser mentality, this is cultural cringe or possibly racism.

If the prick who called Eze a cheat don’t get me, you’re next on my dance card sport. Calling someone a diver is dueling offense, fella.

Why bother having a team if this is how you support them against Sydney and a season of average management and terribly inconsistent refereeing?

So everyone who gets a push and goes over is a diver? It happens 50 times a game, so think carefully. If you’re prepared to reconsider, I can reconsider my debt of honour. Otherwise you’re either a troll, a cringer or a prick of some variety, and I’ll alert my seconds. Assuming they exist.

There have been many many losing seasons over the years.. This season is probably one of the worst!
Watching the goal evole highlighted how horribly poor we are. How we rely on scraps hoping for a goal.

I don’t think many will take positives from that attendance especially as they gave away 1500 free tickets. Without that it may have been less then 3k, which would be the lowest in the history of the club.

I’ll say those words again   “the lowest in the history of the club”

The saving grace is that there is only one more game in Wellington and the crowd will hopefully be more than 3k to see Rufer off.

However using that as a marketing tool may be difficult.

@Kaiapoi That’s all fine. It’s some weird creed popping up all over the place. This isn’t about the result. This is about supporting our players. Plenty more stops for me before this Phoenix fan express gets mothballed.

Be consistent. When the VAR overturns a pen, if you’re near the zone yell: ‘screw you you’re a diving cheat!’

Make sure Armiento, Nagasawa or Eze can really hear you…really thank them for coming to Wellington despite what their agent said.

Strange way to be a fan of a team. Sure, I’d be relieved and bemused if it wasn’t given against us. Maybe even boo the guy who the ref said made up a challenge. If it was an opponent.

Oh and make sure you give the players that world-weary speech about blaming the ref or whatever. And the VAR has been clearly wrong a minimum of twice this season with us, as well as missing a stamp on Cosgrove and something similar by Cosgrove, while the refs are worrying about 3-4 metres up the sideline. Much like the Snedden catch, disallowed because the umpires weren’t watching while they looked for a short run. Listen to Shane Warne badgering the umpires, sandpaper down the jocks etc etc. It’s not blame to say we can help improve our outcomes here, as they are poor for whatever reason.

I dunno how much the team has been thanking the fans who’ve been coming, signing things, posing for photos and that. I hope it’s a lot. I hope every single fan that wants a photo has one. And on the flip side I hope they’ve felt the support through a lame time in our club’s history.

Enough of this second hand Sydney Auckland mongrel creed claptrap. Wellington tough is Hughes, is Siggie, is Jon McKain, is Rufer, is Payney, is Durante, is Emmanuel Moosecat, is the British strike partnership and the Fijian flyer, the Waine Train and Finn Surman, it’s a roar from Steven Taylor, it’s a spider legged cover tackle from James or Kelly-Heald, it’s Piper winning a header, it’s lucky headbandage, it’s the wind, the rain and the Fever! And many, many besides…

We want the fortress back and, yes some damn silverware. Daniel revving up the crowd in the 87th minute.

Pride in the badge, leadership on and off the park.

My problem with the game is we just looked clueless after 1-0. We actually played alright first half and had the better chances, my mate and I in attendance were satisfied with it, but then we come out of the blocks very slow first 5 mins second half and pay the price.

From there... we just looked toothless. We missed Eze's mongrel so bad, and yes he'll be back next week but he won't be back next season. Piper had a poor game, Nagasawa was alright until he went off. Armiento was good in parts but lacked in others, Najjarine did nothing, Retre just always makes the safe pass. Our cross-field passing accuracy and ball control, I've seen better in Southern League. Passing accuracy also poor any time we looked to go forward. We just don't look cohesive going forwards.

Biggest positive of the day for me - Tuiloma on set pieces. Yes he is an average CB by A-League level, but this team has struggled for a long time to do anything from set pieces, but his long throws and presence in the box at corners were often our best goalscoring chances as we looked to get back in the game. Yes we want to and must create more from open play, but this is a big positive if we can build on it even more.

Which when you look at a couple of the attendances in Aussie stacks up okay. Before anyone jumps down my throat NO its not good enough. Just saying when looked at comapred to acouple of other games dont think its as bad as people make out given how we are playing.
There you go good old losers attitude for you negative nancies.

Brisbane only got 3,600 weekend just gone. Population bigger than Auckland that is woeful.
Bad luck for them losing their two best attacking players on the weekend but I think Roar are a pretty diabolical team to watch and maybe their fans agree. Lowest scorers in the league, highest foul count, most yellow cards, a mad coach who has been sent to the stands twice, every week a tedious repetition of argy bargy and hyper-aggression. Ugly stuff.

The league across the board is making me sad and makes me wish things could go back to how it was 10 years ago (minus our Nix-Out battle).

Those were some damn healthy crowds. The salary cap was almost double back then iirc, and the calibre of the players reflected that. 2012-2019 really felt like the peak A-League years. Hope it can get back to these numbers at some point.
Annual finals disappointment enthusiast.
