Fans are especially buzzing about Orlando Pirates performances with 3, 20 year old first team players.

You may have wondered why the Cairo stadium was so empty being that Zamalek are the 2nd biggest team in Egypt. There are a few reasons but mainly that their Ultras have been banned due to crowd violence. Actually across North Africa, there seems to be an issue with crowd violence. Unfortunately their players don't help with breaking this culture (have a look at the handbags been thrown after the Orlando Pirates game).

No reports back yet from Cairo if Stellies players got in a tussle with their losing opponents after the game, but I won't be surprised

Is there a cultural difference between the sub Saharan teams and the Nth African clubs?

From those highlights seemed to be a fair bit of gamesmenship/simulation from the Zamalek players, trying to milk fouls etc. At least once the Stellies players saying to the ref 'come on he clearly dived'.

Bit like how ALM, Korean, Japanese (all East Asian players really) get pissed off with the theatrics of players from the Middle Eastern/West Asian sides.

Big difference!
The North African football culture is in some ways similar to South American. Lousy losers, harass the referee's on every call. Blame everything and everyone for their failure but themselves.

Southern Africa culture is more about the beauty and joy of the game, dribbling, taking the mickey out of your opponent. Enjoying the game.

Southern african fans sit together in the stands even for derbies - No separation and will laugh and mock each others team. Yes on occasion things get heated (and most often fans will deal with it among ourselves) but never to the level that the North Africans take it.

ADJ on at 77 mins (1-0) in a 1-0 win.

Stellies off to Tanzania for their big CAF Confederation Cup semi final (1st leg) this weekend

The other 2 legged semi is between CS Constantine (Algeria) and RSB Berkane (Morocco)

ADJ starts. 0-0 after 30 mins.

Off at 70 mins (1-0) in a 1-0 loss
27 Apr 23:55
Unfortunately Stellenbosch can't find a goal, and it finishes 0-0, so Simba take the semi final tie 1-0 on agg.

No doubt the Tanzanian team having a Sth African coach (Fadluraghman Davids) with lots of experience coaching in the PSL helped them.

ADJ a full game.

Continental adventures over, so back to the PSL for Stellies (4th) as they strive to finish 3rd to qualify for the same CAF Continental Cup comp again. They look to be in a battle with Sekhukhune United (3rd) for that spot.

So unfortunate for Stellies fc they...... losted by a toenail.
And who's toe you my ask? None other than Adj

Stellies scored a goal but VAR ruled it out for offside. Gutted. Andre uncharacteristically started the game as the lone striker which is clearly not his best position (main striker Ashley Cupid is out for the season) but he did ok. Honestly, making the semis of a continental competition on their 1st try is an amazing achievement. Simba Fc showed their experience in African continental football which clearly helped.  Didn't help that they played the game in Durban (not their home city or grounds). Not sure why they didn't chose Cape Town stadium (closer) or any Johannesburg stadium (altitude).

I said at the beginning of this season that this tournament is a poison chalice for PSL clubs but Stellenbosch has proved me wrong by maintaining(close) their position on the log as per last season. Will they spend the money and go for it next season? no.

For Adj, the caf conference cup has been a grand adventurer with a few exotic locations on the way and his face on a popular football newspaper cover

Adj getting a lot of media attention lately in SA. This one is about the possibility of getting into the All Whites WC squad

Well he makes a 2010 WC squad instead of Aaron Clapham (both ex Canty United players). But he ain't making the 2026 version, without leaving the PSL.

Sounds like though he will be staying at Stellenbosch?

https://www.idiskitimes.co.za/fifa-world-cup/stellies-star-targets-2026-fifa-world-cup/

Stellenbosch FC striker Andre De Jong has admitted that he would like to be in New Zealand’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad though he knows it won’t be easy.

De Jong, who hasn’t been called up to the national team since 2022, spoke to iDiski Times Editor Rob Delport in edition 201 of the newspaper where he said he understands why he hasn’t had an opportunity.

The 28-year-old however hopes that with Bafana Bafana doing well and South African clubs also doing well in inter-continental competitions can grab the attention of the New Zealand national selectors as proof that he is playing in a decent league.

“A very good question, one I get a lot within the South African football circles, but yeah, unfortunately, I haven’t been called up for the last couple of years into Darren Bazley’s squad in terms of the All Whites setup,” De Jong told iDiski Times.

“But I still, definitely hold thumbs that one day I’ll be back in the mix and that he is keeping his tabs and tracking me over here. But yeah, just at this rate, he’s obviously ranking leagues around the world as a bit of a higher level to the one that I’m currently playing, that and that’s just the unfortunate nature of national team football.

“And yeah, when not all the players play in the same league, and that it is quite hard to compare player to player and position to position, it’s just one of those things that unfortunately I’ve come to terms with and always knocking on the door and very hopeful of a call up one day.

“But yeah, just have to keep trying to perform within South Africa, and hopefully with Bafana Bafana’s very good performances, as well as the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup South African very good performances, hopefully that is pushing the case that the league is strong over in South Africa and Africa in general, and that it does compare quite favourably to a lot of the other leagues around the world.”

I don't know if it's too fair on the PSL for it to be dismissed out of hand. The lingering expat-Englishness of football in New Zealand often means players only get taken seriously if they play in England - case in point any time any NZ player hits form it seems people say they should move to England.

If the PSL can have players getting selected for Nigeria - a much superior team with much superior depth - then there might be more to it than given credit for. Not to mention, as De Jong mentions, the South African team is almost entirely domestically based and is 22 matches unbeaten and finished third in last year's AFCON.

The striker competition isn't doing anything crazy either (outside of Dyer), so scoring goals should get him noticed at the very least.

Bazeley mentioned he was unlucky to miss out on selection sometime last year. September or October window?

But then early season PSL/Cup comps he was a bit on fire. Goals & assists. It's dried up somewhat since then. He actually only has 1 goal in 21 PSL games (18 starts) to date, this campaign.

Yes Sth African football is in a good place at tbe moment. Bafana Bafana on that unbeaten run. Two PSL teams in the CAF Champions League semis. Sundowns (in the final) could well win it - they have the core of the national team in their squad. Stellenbosch making the semis of the CAF 2nd tier comp.

But who would ADJ push out the AWs. Waine? Just? Rogerson? Barba?
And yeah now you have Dyer on fire in Eire. Though no doubt the LOI will be weaker than the PSL.

De Jong mentioned himself above that it's tricky for national coaches comparing players in different comps around the world. He would make it alot easier for Baze, by signing for AFC or the Nix in the ALM. Plenty of examples at Auckland this season of marginal/fringe AWs, raising their national team stocks.

Excellent points carlind and coochiee

Adj has had ample opportunities to set his All Whites career alight, and apart from 1 or 2 decent performances his never really been able to do so. Some players are just quality league players and for what ever reason fail to make that step across to the national team. My Dad always complained about John Barnes for England while I complain about Phil Foden.

Blaming the PSL quality is a red herring. It was good enough for Boxall to launch his fading career to the MLS and it's good enough for Venezuela to callup Edson Castillo from Kaizer Chiefs (even though they a sf*t team). Yes it's not the most glamourous but scouts, and European Managers love it for relatively cheap quality players, who are able to start in the 1st eleven or be a squad player on bench relatively immediately (just like the A-league).

Stellies win 3-0.
ADJ a full game and the assist for the 2nd goal.

05 May 03:27
Phoenix looks like they could really use Adj for next season. His ability to connect the defense with the midfield (when coming deep to receive the ball) and then play in the front 3 is not available at the phoenix this season. Yesterday game against the roar was depressing. The defence is playing by themselves, and hoping costa will make something out of nothing.

I think there is a good chance he will return, take the wage cut, and hope he can show Baz that he deserves to be in the WC squad.

05 May 03:37 · edited 05 May 03:41 · History
Yipe I agree I'd think he'd be a great pickup for the Nix. Hopefully Chico stays and becomes the main playmaker.

But as this season as shown when either him or Rojas haven't been availble (so about 90% of the campaign) it's been shark to watch. Just no one else to provide that creative spark.

So failing the unlikely of Just or Singh coming down from Europe, De Jong is as good as it could get for a Kiwi in that role.

I see that Brimmer is signed at Auckland until June 2028. But he's not always a starter for them. Be interesting to know if he's happy there or not. More so if he asks to leave AFC, ADJ becomes a target for the Estonians. I doubt the Nix could entice Brimmer to Welly, even after an AFC mutual release.
05 May 05:18
All kiwi players in and around the periphery of the All Whites squad will be looking to get 1st team minutes next season. With Rojas contract ending with the Nix, I think Brimmer would be an awesome pickup (on loan). Cannot see Just and Singh returning to the A-league. They in the WC squad and I think they probably feel that they still too young to return home. For Singh, his main worry is being injury free but if he can't get a new gig (think he signed a 1 year contract in Portugal), then yes a return could be possible. But then there is always leagues like Cyprus, Lithuania etc who love a freeby with potential.

Transfer news around Adj has been dead quiet (very unusual for a well regarded free agent) in South Africa. I know Kaizer Chiefs are definitely through money his way to sign him, so is Stellies. Chiefs are letting go of about 10 players and looking to rebuild (even trying to bring European based players home). Is it quiet because his already told his agent that he intends to return home?

Full game in a 3-0 loss
Sundowns just a class above the rest in the PSL
12 May 07:19
Too the detriment of the league and the national team.

Sundowns has nearly 40 players on its book. One of the largest squads in the world.  Fans have accused them of draining the league of quality players and then putting them on  ice. Giving them fat salaries (that teams in the PSL cannot(won't) match) to train but not play. There is about 10 of these players that are just sitting and not on loan. Signing European based South Africans in their prime (Tashreeq Matthew (24) and Kobamelo Kodisang (24)) which effects the national team in the long run.

This large squad suffocates suffocates the reserve players who cannot compete with a South American or National team players. MLS and European teams want a few of their reserve players but Sundowns don't ever sell players at that level of development. This is in real contrast to Orlando Pirates who this season has run them close (to be with 10 points in close), used about 4 under 21 players regularly in their squad. Players like Rele Mofokeng has become a real star because of the opportunities to player and will leave for Europe at the end of the season (Barcelona B but pundits are encouraging him not to sign for them).

2-1 win Stellies. ADJ 74 mins (2-1).

Stellenbosch go 3rd, after Sekhukhune United only managed a draw.
21 May 04:23
Stellies had their end of season awards gala on Tuesday. Adj was not a winner unfortunately with captain Fawaaz Basadien named "Player of the season". Basadien is expected to join one of the PSL Big 3 next season. Interesting the reserve team player of the year and young player of the season was not Tylon Smith. Tylon Smith was named player of tournament of CAF (African Football Federation) under 20 competition last week (which South Africa won). MLS and European clubs will through big money to sign him. All indicating that Stellies fc is in a super healthy situation with their squad.

Still no news about Adj future plans in the media, which is very strange for a well regarded player in the PSL. If he extended his contract with Stellies or signed a pre-contract with one of the PSL Big 3, the media would have jumped on that.

My gut says he signs for a  ALM or Nordic team(2nd division). It's a long shot because players don't like to take a pay cut (ALM) and with Stellies again in the Caf Conderations Cup he will get more media exposure (than a 2nd division Nordic League) by being one of the favourites to win it.

ADJ 71 mins in a 0-0.

Turns out that is the PSL season is over, though only 28 games were played not 30. Royal AM (0 points) were earlier kicked out of the comp for something.

So Stellenbosch finished 3rd and again qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup.

What now for free agent De Jong. He does seem desperate to make the All Whites, and he's definitely on the fringes. Waine's spot for sure is under question.

Auckland have had plenty of fringe AWs improve their national team stocks this ALM season.

But I reckon he'd be a good pickup for the Nix, if he wants & can play that AM role well?? At 28, fits the age cohort they are looking to fill. Though ADJ only had 1 goal & 2 assists in 25 PSL games. More prolific in CAF & Cup games.

Interesting times ahead.

Edit - Sundowns won the PSL easily, 13 pts clear of Orlando Pirates (2nd). CAF Champions League 2 legged final. 1-1 after the first leg in Jo'burg. Mamelodi Sundowns now travel to Cairo to play Egypt's Pyramids in the 2nd leg. PSL is a strong comp in Africa.

Royal AM (Adj old club for half a season) owners assets were seized by SA Revenue services for no payment of taxes. A controversial figure who made her money through political patronage aka corruption.

She embarrassed the football fraternity on numerous occasions with her uncouth behaviour like giving the players bonus moneys on the field after they defeated one of the Big 3 in the league. The players were so embarrassed they ignored the Royal AM officials displaying wads of cash on live tv and walked off the field into the changeroom instead. Royal AM (AM are her sons initials, who was chairman of the club), also fielded that said son (youngest chairman in the PSL) as a player. The football press promptly ridiculed him so much that he never did it again.

Once the club was seizured, the PSL suspensed them from the league.
21 Jun 11:10
Sth African football on a bit of a high, and credence to the narrative that the PSL is actually a half decent league.

Bafana Bafana top of their WC qualifying pool by 5 pts, with just 4 pool games left.

https://www.espn.com.au/football/story/_/id/45536308/urawa-red-diamonds-ulsan-hd-uphill-battle-opening-losses-fifa-club-world-cup

South Korea's Ulsan HD had arguably their best chance of picking up a win in Group F -- coming up against a Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) outfit winless from two games in their previous appearance back in 2016.

Ulsan, who have won the K League 1 in the past three years, have not been at their best this season -- already trailing leaders Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors by a staggering 12 points in third place.

Their inconsistent domestic form would be replicated on the international stage as they were completely dominated by Sundowns, who enjoyed a staggering 68% share of possession while firing away 14 shots to their opponents' nine.

Ulsan were probably lucky to not have suffered more than a 1-0 defeat, which came courtesy of Iqraam Rayners' 36th-minute strike.

Needs to come back to the a league. Bang in some goals and he could get into the squad...

Via Niche Cache. Seems he's staying with Stellenbosch in the PSL.
Rule him out as a Nix signing.

Preseason has begun with ADJ returning for a third full season with the Stellies.

They finished third in the PSL last term, meaning that they’ve qualified again for the CAF Confederation Cup (which they made the semi-finals of in 2024-25 despite it being the club’s first ever continental excursion).
While he only got one goal and two assists in 25 league appearances during that campaign, playing mostly as an attacking midfielder, De Jong was a regular starter and his coach assures us he’s got that underrated special ability to improve the team around him. Plus he scored seven goals across the various other competitions so he wasn’t exactly in a drought.

Coach Steve Barker made several pleas for ADJ to be recalled to the New Zealand national team which so far have gone unheeded but he’s gotta be close. It might only take one or two injuries and with a World Cup coming up that makes this a hugely important season for Andre. And he’s already bossing it in preseason fitness testing so he’s off to a promising start.

Perennial PSL champs Mamelodi Sundowns did well at the CWC.

Drew 0-0 with Fluminense
Lost 3-4 to Dortmund
Beat Ulsan 1-0

3rd in their pool a point behind Fluminense

Surely he comes to the nix as a 9 or 10 as non visa player. Cant attract the eyes of bazely playing in SA

Adj contract only finishes in January. My mistake. Baze mentioned on The unused sub podcast that him and his technical team are able to see Adj stats and monitor his performances. I think he is very happy with that mention. He understands that he is on the periphery of the All Whites squad.

September window AWs squad selection could be interesting.

L1 plays through FIFA windows, so unless Port Vale or Shrewsbury manage to get their L1 games scheduled then postponed, Waine and Mata may make themselves unavailable for the Socceroos matches.

Both being newish (Mata yes returning) at their clubs and trying to get playing time. Important club seasons for the two of them.
