I believe AFC  fans are experiencing the same Ticketec issues that we keep on getting. Welcome to the A League and Ticketec. Sorry guys but we are used to it.

Sigh.

Ballane there is no comparison on the crowds this season or last.

If not for the two derby games and the Christchurch game, the Nix would have averaged just over 3k this season.

Auckland averaged 18k in the regular season last year and 13k this year. Both season highs for the league.

They don’t have issues. The Nix’s potentially are business breaking.

It’s likely that AFC are more then happy with crowds around that level as that was the size of the stadium they were going to build.

Agreed, and i'm not being all doom and gloom in saying this but we cannot get 5K to some of our games and Ballane wants to mention Auckland crowds.

Hot take, if for some reason the Asian Football Confederation told FFA and the A-League you can only have one OFC mens and womens team going forward we would be told take it or leave it on a Canberra deal.

PS there's nothing out there alarming that makes me think Auckland has no chance of progressing.

Or is it just Auckland fans after a couple of losses? If they’d come in on a hot streak of form and fawning publicity, no problem?

Tbf, last week’s final with a penalty shootout win is something Nix fans haven’t had. Great experience. Memorable night. And thanks Iffy for that!

Also, don’t think there was anything wrong with City’s goal. Great delivery.
I heard on a football pod that as the AFC game clashed with local football they rescheduled something like 170 games out of 280???? Cant remember the exact numbers but thats a lot of teams whose players probably would have gone to the match. You add on players partners and families and it adds up.
Hence the 6pm kickoff for the Adelaide game designed to give more time for local players to get to the match
Also the later KO suits any Port fans who want to go to the AFC II game against Bula FC at Eden Park. KO 2.30pm tomorrow.

EP is going be very empty for the 2nd OPL game tomorrow, being SM v SIU. KO 6.30pm.

This leg of the semifinal is a must-win (and by a decent margin) for A-FC, while Jovanovic is out suspended.
It will be a way more difficult night for the return leg.

Great to see Francis DeVries back. May not  get a full game but could play a part later on. Cosgrove will be pleased.

I thought Elliot did very well in his position last week, shows how versatile he is, will have lifted his World Cup call up chances.

Its really early days for AFC and their support is largely due to their success and being new. But as we all know football teams ebb and flow. Teams win the AL then miss the finals next season.
I dont like AFC but i dont mind that a kiwi team is doing ok at the moment. I also enjoy watching the kiwi boys doing well.
Our day will come. AFC will soon  lose their recruitment privileges and Corica will also leave. We will beat them in the derbies. Keep the faith. In the meantime i hope they win the grand final. It will be great for the profile of NZ football. Then when we kick their arse next season we can say we beat the best.

Our time will come, doubt it, you finally give the golden boy the coach full time for what one year because nobody else is out there. half the fans want the setup full of ex players and I still stand with my opinion of as long as Gill and Dome are involved with the mens team, the men aren't winning anything.

All I hope is that AFC get a pretty good crowd in tonight. All that money going to Australia. I think is wrong. I believe it should be 35% to each club from the ticket sales and 30% to the APL. The clubs are the ones doing the job and have earned the right to make some money out of it.

Brimmer dropped, McKenlay on the bench. Injury presumably
Even so, and not wanting to jinx it,  AFC looking much better on paper than Adelaide.

Crowd in Adelaide will be a big factor in the 4th ‘half’ so they would want to be decisive on the scoresheet tonight.

Decent crowd it seems, I said if Auckland won 2-0 it'll be hard for Adelaide to make the GF.

Two big injuries for Auckland changed the momentum. Advantage probably with Adelaide for the home game on Friday night.

Probably fortunate to actually get away with a draw in the end.

The good news is the team is better on the road then at home.

Still a decent chance of making it.

I can't believe that RAdelaide were gifted three point-blank shots in the first 15 minutes and fired them all at Woud :D That guy gets a bad rap, he's kept AFC in it

Always nice to introduce young people to fandom traditions, eg. chanting WHO ARE YA? at Luke Duzel while taking corners.

Them: "We chanted the same thing at the last four corners, shouldn't we do something different?"
Me: "No! It's funnier every time you do it!"

Adelaide simply got out of the starting blocks much faster than Auckland.  I think Girdwood-Reich was caught napping a bit early on.  Auckland scored through Brook just when the initiall onslaught by Adelaide subsided a bit and the game finally had more parity.
The rain did not help at all, and the wet surface might have also been a reason for May doing his calf in.

Chelsea Women to play an "Auckland FC Invitational" team in August

(Will Sam Kerr be coming for that?)

Of note:
a squad of top local and regional talent, assembled ahead of Auckland FC Women’s historic entry into the A-League Women's in 2027.

So Auckland get a game against Championship side Spurs for the men, fair enough.

Now a nonexistent Auckland side of made ups get a game against Chelscum. And Grand Finalists Phoenix woman get ?? Oh that's right, a Grand Final.

All thanks to more Government handouts to Auckland. They could've funded a game against the Phoenix women. At least we have a pro team.

I doubt Sam Kerr will even still be a Chelsea player by August.

Contract is up at the end of this season and the rumours are she might go to the NWSL

This is going to age like milk. I'm not being negative (just being frank) but we haven't even won anything yet...

If we lose on the weekend, post's like this will make us look embarrasing.

We also need to realise that if for some reason AFC told FFA to get rid of an A-League team in NZ for the next season, Wellington will have one less professional sports team.

age like milk how so? Even if the Wahinix lose they remain the only professional womens football team in the country. Chelsea should be coming to Wellington not going to Auckland to play some fake ass team.

And the AFC is never going to tell FFA to get rid of the Nix, we are firmly ensconced on the board of the APL and have a very strong voice there.

I don't think you know what "aged like milk" means, none of what they have stated here will age, even if they lose the grand final
  • They are still the only professional women's team in NZ
  • They still made the Grade Final
  • They still had nearly 6k fans who showed up last Sunday
  • They will still be the only one that exists (Until this made up one and the Auckland one comes along)
I don't even think its a victim complex post, but asks valid questions about why not. Seems like it would be a lot easier to organise than a put together team and likely more competitive too.

Phoenix management pipped again by Auckland's.

Now, I agree that the government shouldn't be subsidising this sort of thing. But the government is just writing cheques, it's the promoters and the club who come up with the idea and end up driving it.  When the government announced $70m in funding, did the Phoenix head office get working? Did they talk to a promoter about such an event?

The social media post reeks of desperation.

Yipe sadly from the Nix's tweet it seems they won't be involved at all (mens or womens) in this New Zealand International Football Festival. That sucks. All the games to be at EP? Thought they might have at least one match down at new and shiny Te Kaha.

Auckland will host some of the biggest names in women’s football this winter, with the announcement of a headline clash between eight-time WSL champions Chelsea F.C Women and an Auckland FC Women’s Invitational XI as part of the New Zealand International Football Festival at Eden Park.

After playing at Eden Park, Chelsea will head to Sydney where they will play a women’s A-League All Stars team at Allianz Stadium on Wednesday August 12.

the biggest issue for me is that th govt is writing cheques which are being targetted at one city and one city only.

Fair for the club to be a little salty. I would imagine the promoter (TEG Sports) that are putting on this "New Zealand International Football Festival" only worked with AFC (and Govt) and no consideration for Wgtn (one less flight).

of course we'll never know what kind of "applications" process took place for access to the $70m hand outs for these events, but I'd expect the nix would have been banging on the door to be involved and therefore have every tight to be annoyed that the billionaire backed franchise gets even more access to government support.

I think the club and fans should expect this is likely to be the case more often as in Australia promoters (and Govts) target larger metro areas with more direct connections - so finances more easily stack up (and a little bit of pork barrel politics). Why you don't regularly see overseas clubs playing outside of Melb, Sydney,  Perth irrespective of team performance.

This is exactly why government intervention is no good...

As far as I know, the fund isn't specifically targeted to Auckland? Before I scream corruption from the rooftops, I'd be curious whether the business case is easier in Auckland (spending $10m in Auckland likely has a higher ROI than $10m in Palmerston North) and thus how many proposals have actually come from outside of Auckland?

There might be a very good argument made that the "invitation Womens Team" will be composed of A-League womens best players and will play under the ALW banner rather than the Black Knightesses banner.   Commercially speaking that may put plenty of bums on seats, and it may help gauge local interest in an Auckland womens team in future.  Bringing best women from the current ALW season will be a bonus - the combined skills on display will be good, and the chance to beat the Chelseanians even better.
