Elliottt has to talk to his partner before making any move. Long distance relationship is tough. She's on some four year intern programme that might not be easy to change. It depends on Simon's chances to travel to and fro from here and the States. With a short season, it may have some room to see things through, but he has to have a decent talk with her on how it is possible. It seems less likely to happen. He wants to finish his US football coaching courses as well. Which can be bit of a juggle act.

From what i've heard his wife's medical residency is next to impossible to change, seems like a pretty major obstacle to him signing imo

wrong thread, Elliott isn't a triallist.

On the stuff with his missus he has said that he wants game time and that may not be a problem.  Quotes from him some days ago

On TRIALLISTS, we seem to be at

- Toto (90% signed)
- Pav (90% signed)
- Chettleburgh (10% if Pav is 90)
- Shuker (0% gone home)
- Bangbang (depends very much on North deal, if North says no then will have to be very good to take up a foreign spot when we need defensive cover)  I'd have to say though from the sounds of things he's a greenacre type player but has played in much weaker leagues and doesn't come from a traditional anglo/english background which might make assimilation more difficult.  Anyone know if he speaks English?
- YF scholarship winners (probably struggling but may be involved in any future youth/reserve squads if assembled)

I reckon he does ae. He spent years in Malaysia and Netherlands so even though he has limited English, it won't be too hard for him to settle in Wellington. please note that he doesnt speak dutch so there is a big possibility that he spoke in English when he still played in Europe. He is experienced, no doubt about thatemire2010-07-28 00:04:40

Since I seem to be specialising in gross stereotyping this week I will mention that Indonesians typically speak passable English. Much better than the Chinese or even Koreans and Japanese. Please don't crucify me cos that is a massive generalisation, however I don't think language would be an issue (and apparently Toto doesn't speak much English anyway).

it's not just language, it's fitting into the team.  Again assumption but Greenacre's mate from Tranmere from Egland is more likely to fit in as one of the lads than a guy from Indonesia who may speak a bit of English.

Jade North is the key to all of this really

Sounds like he chose to go home.

Some good quotes from Ricki:

http://sportal.com.au/football-news-display/phoenix-close-to-full-team-95615

English triallist Chris Shuker, who only arrived in the New Zealand capital last Friday, has chosen to return to Britain rather than pursue a contract.

"He's kind of realised that he's on the other side of the world to his family so it's a personal decision for him," said Herbert.

...

The decision to sign Pamungkas could hinge on whether North opts to take up the deal on offer from Wellington as only five foreign players are allowed per squad and Herbert could be forced to look overseas for a defender if the ex-Jets skipper chooses to go elsewhere.

"We've got options but I'd like to bring Jade in for a lot of reasons," said the Phoenix coach. "A, he's a quality player. B he's an Australian too so it wouldn't eat into a foreign spot."

"I'm going to sign a defender no matter what. But if we sign another foreign player then your options to sign a defender are back into Australia and New Zealand again and I don't want to have to be restricted by that."

I can only guess Shuker did not think the move was for him. Surely Ricki wouldn't write him off after 10 minutes jetlagged football against a top side. It must have been his own decision.

i know that Wikipedia can be so misleading sometimes, but im actually surprised to see this line

"Bambang Pamungkas is an Indonesian footballer who currently plays for Wellington Phoenix FC His natural position is central forward. Pamungkas made his name in South East Asian football when he scored the lone goal for Indonesia at the 2002 Tiger Cup against Malaysia. His height is 172 cm"

Someone on the forum has got ahead of themselves!

I get the feeling Toto is a sure thing, and Bambang is very likely. North certainly is the most important part of negotiations though.

Not sure if anyone has thought of this yet but can anyone else see us signing youth players to make up the 20 by sunday if Jade North doesn't come through and/or other trialists don't turn out to be what Ricki is after? Then look around for others after that because we still have 3 spots available in the full squad...

Fuck this stupid game

All good. But we still don't have a defender if North goes West.

Ricki probably wont sign him if Jade says no to nix as he has said he doenst want to be restricted to only signing kiwis or Aussies (for a defender) - therefore jade MUST sign

i should agree with you because Ricki must be so selfish if he still wants to sign Bambang while he knows that Bambang is not his main priority

Yeah I was thinking and hoping the same thing.  Surely it's the smartest thing to do considering you pay them f**k all and it'll give us another week or two to trial/check out other genuine starting options rather than wasting money and spot on some muppet just because we were rushed

I thought North was thinking of going East? (Asia)

So Shuker only realised NZ was on the other side of the world AFTER he got here? I guess footballers are not well known for their intelligence so I shouldn't be surprised...

The (lack of) signings is really quite worrying and it seems the World Cup has really had a massive effect on our preparation which is rather annoying to be honest. It almost seems as if nothing was going on at all while Ricki was preparing and taking part in it.

Now that I've read the North deal is back on, I'm more optimistic!

Fact is, we've let about 5 pretty decent players leave, and replaced them (so far) with somewhat 'unproven' players.

Sorry if I can't get too excited but it doesn't seem we've improved the squad, but taken a slight step backwards at this stage.

Saying that, I am excited for the season starting, just don't deny me my moans!

Exactly, and probably not such a bad option after all this talk of a reserve team. Jade North looking more promising now and Pavlovich/Toto looking likely though so maybe no need for it.

Guys, this is not a general transfer thread.  Please keep the discussion to triallists and how they are performing.  You can talk about North and the general make up of the squad
in the transfer speculation thread.

Part of my post from the Nix v Rapa thread:

Toto - a nice finish for the second and put himself about, but not with too much effect.

Pav - hatttrick is always good, missed his first as was in the process of moving from one end to another, his second was with basically with an empty net after the keeper had hacked Pacific Ifill down, and third came from a cross which the keeper deflected onto Pav and which went in. Had another good reaction shot which was superbly saved, and showed quite a few good touches to involve other players and create dangerous situations. Would like him to be stronger with his back to goal for a guy his size though.

Prattley - was competent at the back generally, but didn't really stand out. Not much going forward.

Spragg - impressed with his cameo. Good technical ability, a decent turn of speed, and a good head on such young shoulders. Expect big things from him in the future.

Pacific Ifill (Reg Davani) - good couple of shots, found dangerous positions in the attacking third in the first half, faded a bit in the second. Couple of bad touches too, overall would like to see him against better opposition to get a better idea of what he's about.

Diego was disappointing despite his goal (had two awful earlier attempts) and didn't really do enough in the middle against this level of opposition (went off with a seeming injury for the last 10-15, meaning we finished the game with 10 players). Expected more from Corey Chettlebrough too. Luis Estevez (whoever he is) came on out wide on the right for the last 25, unimpressive.

Where would you expect Pacific Ifill to line up?

The Nix played a 4-2-3-1, and PacIf lined up on the right of the 3. Guess that's Leo's place in the Nix first XI, and Leo is a better player (sans his shooting), so I doubt the club's seriously looking at using up an import spot in this situation.

Surely Diego must have to show improved form to stay in the team.

Swap him for Clapham
