Depends what it means by marquee. If it means a $1m+ kinda player, very few clubs can afford that. But Phoenix have been above the salary cap the last couple of seasons so players have definately been allocated marquee status.

I've seen people assured that is a lie on social media Dale so it can't be true.

So, if the rumours are right, we might be about to sign a coach with no head coaching experience. Is it a case of no one else wants the job and this is as good as we can get? BTW, not bagging the guy. He might be great, and if we pick him, I'll back him.
But... he might not have what it takes to succeed as a head coach. What then?

I do love seeing people (not on here) saying it's a shame Greenacre isn't qualified as he should have the gig and then in the same thread claiming de Marigny isn't aspirational enough for us, no proven head coach experience.

There are some really dim people in this world.

I thought he was quite succesful as a head coach in the NPL? He was also coach of Australia at age group level.

Looking at Wikipedia it's a little mixed:

In 2006 Sydney United finished 4th in regular season but won it in the finals
In 2010 Sydney United came 3rd in both the regular season and finals
In 2011 They came second in both regular season and finals
In 2012 They came 9th
In 2013 Marconi Stalions came 5th

What, you mean WelNix aren't going to bring Pep Guardiola to Wellington? Complete lack of ambition!!!

This Marigny fella's record is far more suited to being Nix coach than Darije's was. Given the circumstances surrounding the club I don't think he'd be a poor signing at all.

So looked at his record

as Head coach

03-04 Marconi NSL 4th

2006 Sydney United NSWPL WON

2010 Sydney United NSL 3rd

2011 Sydney United NSL Runners up

2012 Sydney United NSL 9th

2013 Marconi NSL 5th

So in 6 seasons Won NSL x1, RUp x 1 failed to make finals x1

as Assistant

2005-06 Newcastle Jets A-League 4th

2013-14 Victory A-League 4th (Semi Finals)

2014-15 Victory A-League WON

2015-16 Newcastle Jets A-League 8th

2016-17 Victory A-League RUP

2017-18 Victory A-League 4th

doesn't seem too bad

Problem is, that I have no trust in management to pick the right coach. I wonder why is Adelaide getting someone like Kurz, who played Bundesliga, and we someone who has 188 caps for Marconi Stallions?

Playing at a high level doesn't mean you'll be a decent coach

Also who would want to be coach of a club whose license didn't get renewed?

'So, why did you leave the Wellington Phoenix?'

'They lost their A League license'

'Why was that?'

'No one wanted to turn up and watch us play'

I also think it's a good place to prove yourself as a senior coach.

Less pressure, excellent youth set-up, away from FOX and the NSW media analyzing every thing you do.  Plenty of room for signings, no Mariners league minimum spend, kiwi players available.

Imagine doing the Mariners or Sydney gig as your first role.

I agree the Nix would be a great place for an aspiring head coach to prove himself. Anyone know anything about De Marigny's coaching style? For instance, is he a hard-man Kevin Fallon-type, or a quieter Ernie/Greenie?

That article says that he's a quiet achiever, but I also read on 442 that he's quite a character.

No, I have nothing against the guy. I still would prefer someone who did an awesome job before and convert us into a championship winning team. Nothing on his resume shows me that he can do this.

He also got a 3 week ban at victory for having a verbal with the Newcastle coach on the touch line.

Yep, and he'd only just gotten back from another ban when that ban occured.

Victory fan on Twitter says as an assistant he is aggressive as eff & in a Good Cop/Bad Cop arrangement with Muscat, he is the bad cop.

But as third hand info, take with a pinch of salt.

Anyone who can turn Muscat into a good cop must be very able with managing people

Muscat is a cod to everyone except his players and staff, I get the feeling if you played for him he would treat you like a son. So in this scenario I understand how that dynamic works, but if jpdm really is such an angry guy I can't see us going for him

I suspect that part of the reason they went with Kalezic is that they wanted to shake things up within the squad, it's just that it backfired massively through a whole range of circumstances. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they're looking for someone to do that again, but just coming from a more informed and relatable position in the context of the A-league.

What I liked about Kalezic in the beginning was that he wasn't prepared to make excuses for poor player performance. But somewhere along the line that shaded into "I don't give a fudge about you guys at all" and he just sparked a revolt.

Sure, but why would that coach come here.  It's like saying I have nothing against Krishna, but I would rather sign Chris Wood.

Agree

We had some dealings with Muscat in the early days of Yellow Fever and he was brilliant and very supportive

Why anyone would take any coach a lower table team? It’s a job after all, could be a new challenge. There must be tons of unemployed coaches. Wellington offers a lot for families and great lifestyle. You have to pitch it right. Any good coach will think he can do it better than  the guy bdgire.

We really can't be too picky.

'Experienced' A-League coach - Vidmar, rejected the job.

Top local coach - Ramon, doesn't have licenses.

Favourite among players - Greenacre, doesn't have badges, results have been poor even if performance hasn't been.

JPDM has been around the league for a long time, and is Vidosic-esque in that he's not really been tried nor proven as a head coach at this level. It could go bad, could go good; but the same could be said for any coach.

As Ricki was saying when involved in the commentary a few games back, [paraphrasing] put the 10 best coaches in the world in a league, and one of them will get the wooden spoon.
