How about Christian Vieri? He's 34 years old and is currently with Fiorentina.
He may fancy a move to the a-league seeing as he used to live in Australia.

I remember talk of him goin to Bling a year or three back... but when he was finally nailed down it seemed that there was never anything in it... from him at least lol

Vieri thinks a bit much of himself to go to a lesser league than serie a I think. start of this year he was saying he was hopeful of being called up to italy squad still! he's a little up himself if anyone has seen some of the things he said to the press. on the other hand I don't know the guy personally so anythings possible but I highly highly doubt he'll be coming to the a league.

Mind you, Gao is actually a natural striker and he used to be the "SUPER SUB" striker for Beijing Guo'an. If we really could not find a good striker then find another attacking mid and push Gao forward...
Moss
Lia - Durante - Dodd - Lockhead
Bertos - Brown - Hearfield - Daniel
Gao - Smeltz
(I just randomly made def and mid up but you get my point)

Hope we're keeping tabs on this. We could pick one up.
Obviously Queensland has done better scouting than we have. They have 2 (by all reports good) strikers wanting to join up and we don't.

Strikers may fall foul of Queensland Roar's wage cap
By Marco Monteverde
June 05, 2008 12:00am
SALARY cap constraints could prevent Queensland Roar launching a three-pronged foreign attack force on its A-League rivals next season.
Brazilian pair Bruno Mezenga and Marcio Carioca have joined Dutch target man Sergio van Dijk in Brisbane, and hopes are high the trio has the potential to score a bagful of goals for the Roar.
However even though the club has three available visa player spots, there is no certainty all will be able don a Queensland jersey in the coming season as the Roar floating close to its $1.9 million salary cap.
Only 19-year-old Mezenga, who has joined on loan from Brazilian giant Flamengo, is guaranteed a spot.
Carioca and van Dijk will be trying to impress Roar coach Frank Farina in the next few weeks, knowing only one will get the nod if there is no room for all three forwards.
Van Dijk, the 25-year-old former FC Emmen striker, has the jump on Carioca, having arrived a week earlier. He has already found the net three times in two trial games.
Carioca, formerly of Portuguese outfit Pacos de Ferreira, and Mezenga, a former Brazilian under-17 international, only landed in Brisbane on Sunday.
"They're still waking up at two in the morning because of jet lag," said Farina, who admitted he had been highly impressed with van Dijk.
"His training, his attitude - he's been very good. He's got the game, there's no doubt," Farina said.
"But it just depends on what we've got to spend. It all comes down to the money."
The stocky van Dijk, who along with Mezenga will get game time tonight when the Roar hosts Brisbane Strikers at Richlands, has the physical presence that could make him an A-League force.
"I'm in for an adventure," the Dutchman said.
"In Holland it's physical, but not as physical as here. Every day when I train I try to get better.
"Here the defence always puts pressure on you and you never have time to relax. In Holland you've got a bit more space."
Carioca, 25, is lacking match fitness but feels he has the strength to cope with Australian defences.
"I've played a lot in the north of Brazil, and it's definitely more physical there than the rest of Brazil," Carioca said.
"A striker survives with goals and hopefully I'll sign here and score goals. In Portugal I didn't score as many goals as I normally do, so this is a personal challenge for me."
The slender Mezenga, 19, hopes to use the A-League as a launching pad for a lengthy European club career.
"This is a very good chance for me to improve my strength by playing a game that's more physical and that has more power and more speed," Mezenga said.
"By hopefully eventually going to a good club in Europe, my chance to play for Brazil at senior level will be higher."

Valeo, thats quite interesting, thanks for posting that up. Will be worth keeping an eye on. By the looks and sounds of things Farina is very impressed with Van Dijk (btw, that scissor kick was awesome!) so I'm sure he'll be able to get him on board, which may leave Carioca behind for other A-League clubs. Such as us.
Looks good for QLD though, the young kids like Zullo and Minniecon, seemingly quality imports... they could do well this season.

I'd really like to think we could do better than another A-league clubs lefts overs.
You have to give Queensland credit for being spoilt for choice for strikers - some bloody good scouting / recruiting.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

agreed the kid from Flamengo might be useful, but do we know that the other two are up to much?
they sound more enticing than mr Mcbreen but (hopefully) they'll turn out to be huge disappointments for the roar fans (if they sign either of them)
or, best of all Roar sign them, and then they discover their ineptitude (with any luck!)
and our unheralded option "b",or c or d turns out to be a hidden gem
(that's my supply of optimism for the day all used up

Uh, we obviously can't at the moment because Plan B is apparently just that - another A-League striker (obviously) unwanted by another A-League club. These guys aren't leftovers - if you actually read the article you would find that they want to sign them both but they can't fit em under the salary cap.

Lia and Ferrante are leftovers - so lets cut out this 'leftovers' sh*t. If their good enough for our team, regardless of if they come from Porirua or Timbuktoo, they should be signed.
Where they come from is not the issue.
The point is the longer we leave the signing of our strikers the less choice we will have. Not only will we have less choice but you would have to think the cream of the crop will have gone. If we really aspire to be contenders for the title (and of course we should) we need to be at the front of the recruitment pack not the arse end. If the other A-league clubs have already had their pick of the A-league talent pool then what will we be left with ?
Tony has said be patient, they're on to it and that's great to hear. I just get nervous when we talk about filling key remaining spots out of the A-league. Hopefully we are looking beyond A-league players to fill at least 1 of our striker spots.

Our main aim was Porter. It didn't work out. We now HAVE to be at the arse end of the recruitment pack. Reality sucks, but hey.
Like Tony P said there is huge competition for strikers within the A-League. We might just have to take what we can get.

Which is not the way to win the A-League. Realistically, what can we expect with the current crop without another gun striker? Top 6?
Top 4 seems a dream. For this season at least.

i think this logic is slightly flawed, Tony has always said we were in the market for 2 strikers, so that must mean we were negotiating with others while working through the porter issue..

Bollocks. Last year we weren't off the pace in goals for, we got hammered in the Goals against column. We've overhauled the defence, Costa and Drapes are a year older, no reason at all the current squad won't be more competitive.
We'll get a couple of decent strikers anyway.

Good call. It is way too early to get down and out about our chances this season.
We are stronger defensively, have got 3 new first rate attacking midfielders, and we still havent finished our recruitment, one of which will be a striker.
Keep the faith, brother!

Totally agree. There seems to a feeling that if we don't sign a "gun" striker then we are doomed for this season.Well we scored bucket loads of goals last year......25 in all, the same number as the Jets, and they won the competition. Its the defence that let us down.
We have the same attacking guys this season as did the business last year. Plus we have added Gao, who looks a great prospect on the left and Bertos who has topped the A-League for assists. In addition Daniel looks extra sharp and fully fit and we have another attacking midfielder in Hearfield who is Aussie rep(u23) plus Costa.
I don't think scoring goals will be a problem....provided Smeltz stays fit and in form. At the very least we need a backup, someone who can do as good a job. I am sure that Tony and Rickie are very well aware of whats needed and are working on it big time. Getting it 100% right is better than rushing in and ending up with duds.

there is only one depressing thing, (sorta depends on which way you look at things) Felipe, Aloisi, Old, El**ch, Rees scored 9 goals for the nix last season so hopefully the new recruits can fill the void. Hopefully (what am i saying) Smeltz has another blinder of a season.
eh, im having one of those days i guess...

The suns out, the birds are singing... we've got a great season to look forward to and no reason not to be positive... there's new players keen to make an impression as well as last years team wanting to step up and build on Year One... and as mentioned, there are others to come on board yet... keep the faith!!!
(and I won't make any generalisations about Man U followers either lol)
Chances are your shirt will be off at the ROF before ya know it!!!

Still though sometimes we need to be realistic and I personally think its putting a lot of pressure on Smeltz to be our Number 1# striker and score as many as last year.... Im looking forward to the season but I think we do need to bolster our strikeforce.

I'm not saying we don't, and I'm not saying we'll win the league either (or finish last again)... what I am saying is that the season hasn't started yet and we know the signing/s haven't yet been completed so don't have a sooky yet... last year was unique for the club, given the tight turnaround from acceptance to the league starting and I think the management team did well to create a team in such a short time that performed relatively well under trying circumstances. everyone involved has learn't from that experience and gained additional knowledge and skills as a result... I would be surprised if the performances didn't then improve, the unknown factor is by how much - in relation to our performance last year, and also in relation to the other franchises...
And as has been already mentioned, the strikeforce is being bolstered... we wait with eager anticipation to see with whom lol

exactly there is absolutelyno need to worry, don't forget we have quite a clustered attacking midfield now with our great new signings so far, with both gao and hearfield having some ability to lay striker, so at the end of the day, even if we don't sign someone, which i'm sure we will, we have gao hearfield smeltz coveny costa draper to striker, and still command a midfield with daniel bertos ferrante and brown/johnno etc. not to mention one of goa or hearfield coming back ito midfield. we've got more depth than u give us credit for, an extra striking option just improves things even more

Remember we haven't played our marquee card yet and not all marquee players for the other clubs have been that outstanding since A-league started except for Juninio. It has been a mixed bag for them. So recruiting doesn't mean success, winning games means success, so let wait for the season to come eh?

I think the marquees havent been to bad.
Agostino (although was injured) and Thompson i think are two very very good marquees.
But Jardel and El**ch made a mockery of the marquee concept
