Aside from McKain, the Phoenix will reopen discussions with other players off contract, including Eugene Dadi and Adrian Caceres.

However, it's understood squad players David Mulligan and Michael Ferrante will not have their contracts extended.

what are the rules for the yellow fever scholarship just out of curiosity?

Briefly:

1. Nominations from YF members
2. Vote of YF members determines shortlist of 3
3. Selection Committee (me + Ricki) picks winner from shortlist

Also:

For players to be eligible they must be Kiwi and young enough to fill one of the Phoenix youth spots.

That is all.

Will be launching this year's Scholarship this week all going to plan.  Just need to find the time.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Here's some nice future 'transfer speculation':

"...Nelsen has been following the Phoenix's run in the A-League playoffs and says he would be interested in joining the Wellington-based club in the future.

He says the idea of playing in front the Yellow Fever is very appealing."

Na he's heard about the rules in the A-league, he's heading one ball and the other one is coming off his arm, which is in a natural position

Assume the Nix will be looking hard at that option.

What about Ifill's mates from Millwall and other clubs who might like a chance to be big fish in a small pond (compared to playing in the lower UK leagues).

Wasn't one of the nominations last year a female though? She certainly wouldn't have been able to fill a youth spot cos you have to be a bloke.. or has FIFA changed the rules?

So females can be nominated for this year as well if they fit all the criteria?

Am guessing that guy on the front page will be a frontrunner for the scholarship money.

What scholarship money?

Winner gets a week training with the Phoenix all expenses paid.  There's no cash component.

OK so it doesn't matter if they can't actually become part of the squad, just if they are young enough to fit into the age restrictions? Just want to clarify. Not trying to be sexist...

And this is why the Nix need a team in the W-League.

Do you fit the age criteria? If you do, just nominate yourself and then you can start lobbying the club in person.

Sadly, I'm about twice as old as necessary, and my Auckland fourth-tier women's team would be lost without me anyway.

A good option for striker is Danny Webber.  Came up through the ranks at Man United, good spells at Watford and Sheffield United, mostly at Championship level I suspect.  (Would have been at Sheffield at the same time as Paul Ifill.)  Currently with Portsmouth, but not a regular in the first team.  About 28 years old so maybe time for a change in direction.  Given Pompey's financial position I bet he is looking for a new team.

Think he'll be looking slightly higher than the A league. But hell, anyone is worth an enquiry at least.

Then Paul Scholes it has to be - and Gary Neville to cover the difficult right back spot.

Wow....captain fantastic Ryan Nelsen at the Nix. Now that would be something special. Not sure how long his contract is at Blackburn....but defenders can go on forever. For him coming to the Nix post Blackburn is probably a more atractive option than drifting down the grades in the YK.

He would be a great guy to kick off a new Canterbury A-League team in a few years time. But it would take a minor miracle for NZ to get another A-League team anytime in the future. (there has been lots of chatter coming out of OZ that maybe we should get a second team the way football is rocketing ahead in this country)

What a coup that would be to have him in the Nix....a quality guy like him could play in the A-League into his late 30's.

Nelsen's contract expires at the end of his 2011/2012 season. He'd turn 35 during the 2012/2013 A-League season. It would be fantastic to have him at the Phoenix or a new Canterbury team, but will his body hold up?*KR*2010-03-17 17:44:22

The Kiwi Maldini, it even rhymes.
You know we belong together...

Maldini played 'til he was 39, Muscat's 36 and going strong.  If he came here aged 34 and played two seasons I'd be happy.

He'd join Auckland's new franchise.... that would make one hell of a derby, welly vs Aucks.

Who would the rest of the country support??

Ah yes I remember watching him in Tianjin. Would make Eugene Dadi look like Usain Bolt.

And isn't Ryan Nelson a Christchurch lad? Hope someone is putting the idea in his head of a Canterbury franchise...

I'd much rather see Nelsen play at the highest level possible for as long as possible. We don't have enough players playing at that level.

Fair call Valeo, but when he's ready to take it a little easier we'll welcome him

I don't want Dadi for another year, i honestly think he did a great job for us this year, but he seemed really lethargic at times on the field and I believe a more energetic / quicker target man will offer us much much more( assuming we find one). He was only really getting a little run of the bench in the end and Ricki has said all along that he wants someone to start next to Greeny.

Kris Bright could be an option.

He / Dadi will only get slower and slower.
