I'd like Elliott, but the fact that he's 36 poses some serious questions. How long can he keep that up? How much would he want? Would he settle for a 1 year contract?

He's a free agent, I'm sure he'd take it. But we shouldn't splash out huge bucks for him.

Does Elliott want to come back to NZ?

I thought he was pretty settled in LA

I'd be concerned about his fitness. As to his quality I no longer have a problem. He is a significantly better passer of the ball than Brown or Lia I think, plus he has valuable experience and a cool head.

However I almost hope we don't pick him up because I don't think I could cope with any entire season of whooooo's 'fun' posts.

well the way people behave when I say Elliott is not very good, I mean you are on me like flies to sh*t.

all right, I know I go too far with my comments, I'll be the first to admit that but lets remember it's the internet. A little forum on the world wide web. People need to relax and stop taking things so seriously.

it's the off season, I need to have some fun

People are just saying there opinions it seems to me that you take them to heart.

If we got Elliott, he wouldnt be the workhorse in midfield, we have Lia, Brown, Muscat to do all the running for him. He would be adding the creativity that we need, and lacked when we play. Im sure Ifill would appreciate someone who can pass him into space, rather than having to create it himself.

This.

Personally I think Elliott would be a fantastic signing for a season, 2 seasons would be a bit of a stretch though. He is old but he is quality.

Uses up a overseas player slot for an Aussie club tho, so would have to be very impressive I would think. But would mean he wouldnt just be a squad player, what he probably would be with us.

I wouldn't rule out a stint in the A-League with the Wellington Phoenix. They had a great season last year, but nothing's been discussed. That would have been inappropriate in the midst of some of the biggest games that New Zealand's ever had. Ricki Herbert wears two hats as national coach and Phoenix gaffer, but his focus has been 100% on the All Whites, as has mine.

That makes it sound like if we want him, he'll be wearing the stripey next season.

I hope Clapham does to go the Jets, or even the furries. I'm all for more New Zealanders in the league, especially if it's someone who wouldn't start for us.

Would be happy to see Elliottt at the nix, he offers a passing game that none of our central mid-fielders possess. Showed at WC that at 36 he still has plenty to offer.

According to 3 News Paston has interest from Tottenham, however the article is titled 'Paston fends off female fans at Auckland Airport' , was written by someone called Jane Luscombe and features this line...

'Paston says he hasnt heard anything from the Tottenham Spurs'

So you'd have to wonder her football credentials.

Yeah it was a load of rubbish. The source was "someone emailing 3 news claiming to be an insider from spurs"

Couldve been some random on here having a laugh even.

I had a god chuckle when they mentioned Tottenham haha. He would obviously be a better keeper than Gomes or Cudicini (I think hes at spurs?). If anyone looked at his first game at the cup then thatd set them straight

Deon Burton ex-Charlton/Derby striker 33 on his way "overseas" - doesn't say where but given his last club was in League 1 could be the A League.

About 6 weeks to go until our first game against GCU. Currently 17 players signed, of which 2 are u21 (I don't think Crowther counts anymore). So need 1 more u21 player and at least 2 more players to get the squad minimum of 20.

Pre-season games to come (that I know) against Brisbane, Adelaide (in Adelaide) and Boca Juniors (and definitely more against local opposition) to trial players. Getting close...

At the moment it seems more rumours are of players leaving than coming.

Amdy Faye
Marlon Harewood
Lee Hendrie
Christopher Killen (didn't know he was released)
Clinton Morrison
Benjani Mwaruwari
Erik Nevland
Paul Scharner
Mikael Silvestre

Much chance of signing Andrew Milne up as an U20?  Heard he was in the country.

Don't know if he is on the radar.  The two scholarship lads haven't been yet so they are always an outside chance as well.

Incidentally, Killen as our extra man up front ?  Yes please.

How's my driving? - Whine here

Dont think he impressed enough at the world cup to get a contract in anything but the lower leagues sadly. That stint at Celtic really stalled his career, he was going great at Hibs.

I get the impression Killen would rather sign for a big club without getting much gametime. What's to say a team like Hibs wouldn't want him back.. all he needs is one season where he finds the back of the net reguarly and he'll be set again.

We certainly wouldn't want him back so he could do the dirty on us after 1 season again (after sticking by him through his many injuries).

I also think you are right - Killen doesn't TRULY care about playing, he'd have left Celtic long before he eventually did had that been true.

Easy money sitting on his arse week in, week out.
edit - would still take him at Phoenix though...

Leo to Werder Bremen?

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/fifa-world-cup/3876883/Werder-Bremen-interest-surprises-Leo-Bertos

Surely nothing more than speculation and rumours but interesting none-the-less. Thought he looked sharp against Paraguay, more than willing to run with the ball. Without too much pressure to get back and defend, I reckon he has enough to make a showing in the Bundesliga.

Given Ozil's form at the world cup, I'd have to agree almost agree with that (not quite the worst, give Bertos some credit)

Bertos to Bundesliga is a bit of poetic licence dont you think?

You'd have to look at how fatigued Leo looked at the end of a (much shorter) A-League season last year, wouldn't you?

That said, i'd keep him, if only because he's my 3 year olds favourite phoenix player.

I don't think the gap in quality is as great as most people think.
A lot of it comes down to players improving quickly over a short period with a greater level of coaching (intencity of training) and football education (tactical training).
There is nothing to say that after one season in the Bundesliga Bertos would not be a first team regular.
Look at Michael Beauchamp... went from CCM to the Bundesliga and started about 50% of his clubs games in the first season.

That's pretty harsh going that he's always bent over backwards to be available to play for his country. Plus what qualifies you to know about the inner workings of Chris Killens mind? He went on loan a few times while at City and went on loan to Middlesborough, seems like a keen professional to me.

^^Exactly, it's pretty disrespectful to a player who has given his all for the All Whites and I would imagine would do the same for his club and wanting to play as much as he can. And going by your prior record Steve-O, i'd say you're basing your statements on a whole sh*tload of nothing.ScoobyD2010-07-02 13:19:16
