That's what I meant by ought... I tend to have a dreadful case of pessimism when it comes to our cricketers. A bit like the 'Nix at times, will pull out extrardinary results aginst the odds, but when it comes to claiming matches they should...

| 49.6 | Bracken to Vettori, FOUR, he's done it! Vettori's hit a boundary! Bracken bowls a full ball outside off stump, he was looking for the yorker no doubt.Vettori loves width outside off, he loves the cut, and he places the ball through backward point and yells in triumph |

Cricinfo doesn't come with the CHannel 9 team. Yay Cricinfo.Someone want to run me through the Broom thing ?
Basically, Haddin knocked off the bails as he was collecting the ball over the stumps. The batsman should be given not out even if the wicketkeeper has his hnds over the stumps anyway, let alone if the keeper himslef knocks off the bails.
The cheating c**t pretended it was a clean dismissal and the muppet umpires went with it, even though it was clear that Broom had his doubts.
On a slightly different matter, can anyone explain to me why Grant Elliott is in this team?

Im not a huge Elliot fan but his ODI record is actually pretty good, has done well in some tight spots for us aswell. In this team in particular I guess he is in Piggys spot, who would you have in front of him? Don't say Matthew Sinclair, Cumming is the one over there who could come in.
Did anyone hear Healy or Gilly comment on the Broom thing? I was looking forward to getting there take on it but I dont think they mentioned it

I know his record is OK, what I want to know is what's his role in the team?
He's not a good enough batsman to play in the top 6 at international level, and if he doesn't bowl at all, what the hell is he in the team for? Know that he had to be played last night because of Ryder's injury to provide some bowling cover if needed, but his place in the squad mystifies me, his record notwithstanding.
If he's an all-rounder, how come he's in the squad ahead of Franklin, who's better with both bat and ball? If he's a batsman, why not go with someone who has more talent, is younger, and gives us more batting depth? Particularly thinking of How here - could re-jig the batting order to make that work.
The reality is, Elliott is a decent player, but is limited - I think he's well aware of this, and he plays accordingly, and good luck to him. From a wider selection point of view though, I can't really understand what the selectors are trying to achieve with the way they've been picking the sides. I mean, when you take a 14-man squad to Australia and only pick 5 specialist batsmen plus McCullum it really gets you thinking. I nearly cried when I saw the 11 we had last night, it's a miracle we managed to pull it off.

I know what you mean EG. When i saw O'Brien's name in the side i thought it was curtains but he surprised me and bowled very well even chipped in with a couple of wickets.
Bit of a break before the second match which is a bummer because we can't really build too much momentum up.

Three for me, and two for them.

Interesting and probably fair points you make in regards to Elliot. With regard to Franklin i'm yet to be convinced since his return to the international game.
I like the idea of having a guy at 5/6/7 who can knock the ball around at run a ball and turn ones into twos. The role McCullum/Marhsall/Vincent played when they were down the order.
Elliot isn't a number 5, thats for sure but I think he can play a role.
At the moment with How and Flynn horrendously out of touch I think Elliot is probably the best option we have available, Williamson may be a long term option but not quite there yet.
My top team with Piggy and Jacob available would be
Ryder, McCullum, Guptill, Taylor, Styris, Oram, Broom, Vettori, Mills, Southee, Patel. Pretty strong team looking at it to

I guess I harp on about Franklin because I've seen quite a bit of him lately. He clearly stands out at the first-class level, and he could not do any worse than Elliott if in the team. He could do a lot better though, so it really surprises me to see Elliott ahead of him in the pecking order.
Like that too, but Elliott's not the answer there. I actually think we should drop McCullum down the order, think he's started to belive the hype that he's absolutely awesome at the top of the order (which he's not), and I'd have a combo of Ryder/Guptill/How as the top three. Return of Oram would change that though.

Don't think that Elliott's the best option at the moment, Williamson is too young at this stage.

That's a very good side. Unlikely to be fielded this season though.

Justin Langer the c bomb that he is said on ABC last night that only one NZer would make a composite NZ/OZ team, having a effing laugh!
McCullum, Vettori, Mills, Oram would walk in. Taylor would probably be in there to, and Ryder is better than Warner and Marshso we would have at least 5 or 6 in there

We won't get them out again that cheaply, yet we only just got it.
Our middle order looks horribly weak.
But there are plenty of positives to take out of the bowling and fielding performance!
Anyone else think Warner is a mug? Filthy slogger who is getting found out quickly.

Elliot is a good number 7 and I like him there although 5/6 is not the right position for him if he comes in too early in the game. My team for the next game:
McCullem
Ryder
Guptill
Taylar
Fulton
Broom
Mills
Vettori
Southee
Patel
O'Brian
My only concern is how short our tail is and it puts huge pressure on our top 6 to get 230 min.wellyphoenixfan2009-02-02 15:42:53

you mean how long our tail is!!?!? Vettori has to come in before Mills, and that leaves a tail of Mills southee, patel, Obrien - none of these have really scored huge runs, bar one freak occurren from Southee.
Elliot did the job he was asked to do, hang around and support Taylor, that is why he came in above Broom...the innings needed to be stablilesed which Elliot did. Its unfortunate he got our the way he did cos he was looking ok.
Will be a tough selection when Ryder comes back, cos Guptil has to stay as does Broom........I can't see the team changing for game two they'll bring Ryder back in game three.
Queenslander 3x a year.

I wouldn't count Vettori or Mills as tailenders. Both can bat reasonably well so the tail isn't all that long.
