Good point re lack of an active supporters zone at AWs homes games - which mostly go to Auckland. Wasn't there but the last big AWs game in Auckland, the Socceroos in 2022 was apparently a deadly dull match day experience.
Sounds like the OFC WC qualifying semi & final next March will be split between Welly & the 09, ie one in each. If so that's good news, and hopefully the YF & The Port can add some 'White Noise' atmosphere to each game. The AWs so seldom play in NZ, that you'd hope it can be a bit more of loud celebration - especially with high stakes Bahrain & Peru playoffs a thing of the past.
wow what that game was cool as. didnt get to take my grandson he had a birthday party. those port fellas are funny buggers. they kept singing stuff to the sydneys goalkeepa.
one of the guys in the port south stand told me like 500 of them are going down to wellington for the game this weekend
should be a mean as game! good luck phoenix but go go auckland paddy
Was thinking that the other day, that the Port seems to be a younger vibe which is great to see. Also seem to be more active on Socials than the YF. I guess with a new group they need to be. Be cool if YF up the game on the socials, maybe could get more younger members in. Also the port flags are on point imo AucklandPhoenix
Seems to be a lot of young guys in the port section, which is understandable when they want to have a party and drop some smoke. Cheaper tickets helps those guys.
Doesn’t appear too many old crusty Brits in there as initially thought.
Was it only me but didn’t a large number of them take of their shirts when AFC scored.
Shirts off with 10 mins to go, likely to be displayed if they are ahead with 10 mins to go in Wellington?
Think the youngest Fever have always had an A league team their whole life and perhaps also have been coming with their parents? Perhaps they’re a bit blasé cos they’ve always had a team? Maybe they even had Ifill posters on the wall growing up. The Phoenix are a generation old. It’s a different thing to ya Tik Tok Frankstein Auckland!
Whereas the Port is brand new and belongs to this generation. Making it up as they go along. Did think not many of these f- are over 30 as you celebrated that goal!
What was with that guy tweaking the PM’s nose? Did Ali Williams give them $30 if they tried it? Seems very much his humour if I remember anything from the 90s etc…but cringe and really funny? Eh…unless of course Nick Becker scripted it to get in the kids like the equally cringe pitch invasion…
See how they’re riding in 18 or 19 years!
Maybe the socials explain the over eagerness too. It’s always hand to hand combat in the comments. Once they’ve lost a few and had a few things go wrong and stayed up to watch games in Perth or Vic only to get smashed…Then they’ve got to find some perspective.
lol. I remember watching a late game at the Fox. Terry came in to watch with two women with him. We played baaaad and he left at halftime!
It’s cute all these suggestions from a club that’s two games old and backed by 3? 4? billionaires and pockets of millionaires.
It’s kind of like that talented kid on the team who hasn’t had the first big injury yet and had to watch as other players take his spot and do fine. No shortage of confidence.
I’m sure the Fever could do with a bit of baton changing at some point, but that already might be happening organically. The forum has been kinda quiet for about 10 years tbh! The elite and the cool kids are rarely here as much as some of us.
As well I know the youngest member on the podcast seems to pride themselves on their education and their eloquence (such a snob), so that’s a point of difference from what we’ve encountered with Auckland’s yuff so far!
What was that Black Hole Sun parody? Though that used to be mostly aimed at the North Shore…and that’s only 15 years old as a reference…
yoof
To be honest, a lot of the Fever who organise stuff are still around and doing it, but we are older, have jobs and kids now. We aren't as online much and we don't spend our whole day at the pub before kick off. We have less time to organise things. However we still are getting the banners done, we have our second march for this season planned this weekend and did that great one for the finals.
We aren't stand-offish, if people want to help or have ideas, we are more than happy for them to give it a go. I think sometimes we can be a bit blasé about things as they have tried and failed before but we won't ever stop someone from trying again (as long as it's not going to be reputation ruining).
There is some young blood coming through with the Foster Crew, but things will happen organically. There is no rush and we don't have any need to "compete" with anyone else, we've been doing it for 17 years already.
Group of young guys who have brought some energy back into the zone and also got themselves involved in doing stuff. Easy to spot on TV as they are the guys that pass around the red hat. Will leave it to them to explain. Good dudes
Would be interesting early next year, after Christmas to ask the powers that be, how they are tracking for shirt sales.
Think commercially with the sponsors they have on board, coupled with good crowds and merc, they will do well.
Also I think they have been sensible recruitment wise and based upon their imports and hiring predominantly kiwis, many of whom were searching for clubs, can’t have broken the bank in players wages.
Obviously have a decent administrative crew, but I imagine Foley would demand this is managed efficiently and there is no dead wood.

Am coming down from Auckland with a group of lads. Still unsure of where my loyalties lie - I didn't miss a Phoenix home game from day 1 for many years until moving away from Wellington. So still feeling conflicted.
With that said, I'm just so excited to be part of the buzz and energy around football in NZ right now. Truly a lot of people opening their eyes in Auckland and reckon there'll be a decent number of travelling fans.
As people have said, hopefully people can eventually rally around the All Whites!
not going to do a reply because this thread is getting so long, but …
Thank you kindly. In return for your consideration, here is the hack you need;

Wish others would do this rather than repeat quote 8 previous users just to make a one line comment. I’d probably add this as a pre-programmed option if I did a forum.
Am torn for this game. Nz football comes first in my eyes.
A proud Waikato boy through and through who grew up supporting the Kingz and became involved somewhat with the Knights, logically jumping to the Nix when Terry answered the call from his barber’s chair.
I want both sides to win every game and whilst a die hard Nix fan who pushes the Nix hard in Europe, I am excited for a pro team close to home. Guess I just want to see a cracking game showcasing the best two teams in the league.
C’mon you Nix-land.

Again we have someone coming to OUR forums and not liking it when they get called on something. Dosnt matter how you try and put it a free ticket is a free ticket dosnt matter if its been handed out by the club or a sponsor.
Fact is free tickets were given away for BOTH Auckland games dosnt matter how or who by.
So what if it puts a bum on a seat who cares just like the pretense it didnt happen.
Getting over some of the high and mighty shark thats coming from North of the Bomabays you wouldnt think we are only two games in the way they are carrying on
Pretty hyped up about this game and it's only Wednesday. A dream of having 2 NZ based A League clubs has come true and now our first ever "real" Derby game. Part of me is proud of football in NZ and also of the A League for taking the chance. Massive day coming.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Not to dwell on the troll but it's such a weird criticism. I used to go out of my way to wrangle free tickets as a student having never been to live football before - now I've been paying to come to Phoenix games for 15 years. Probably the best return on investment Terry Serepisos ever made lol.
Anyone see the news tonight? What a load of BS haha where on earth did they find these ‘sources’?. Anyway, I’m excited for Saturday, what a great celebration of kiwi football it’s going to be!

" So where the hell did ‘The Port’ come from? Maybe we should ask the Auckland FC marketing team, because it seems they created ‘The Port.’ It's not really a supporters’ club - it is a marketing initiative. "
Ooooh, that one's got a grain of truth in it
In that The Port have evolved in a close relationship with club management, in the sense that YF didn't, I believe?
(Although I do think The Port is a good name, at least no sillier than any other name)

While I'm not hardcore Port - I do wonder why people are so anti the name and the close relationship the port guys have created with the club, that's surely a good thing for fans to have a real connection to the club?
Re the port name - I think that it's a generic enough name that it will work wherever the club ends up playing in Auckland, particularly if there ends up being a waterfront stadium. That said Mt Smart is not far from Port Onehunga.
EDIT - this is not targeted at you Doloras - just following your comments

I don't have an issue with the name itself, I do find it funny that they cheer more for themselves than for Auckland FC whenever you see them post on Facebook. That's like us going Come on you Fever, instead of Come on you Nix. It's cringe and very RBB like.

yeah I get that part of it - I guess they are trying to make sure people get on board early - I'm hoping that dies off a bit over the season, also I'm very anti any songs about the nix - but that's a personal preference.
I think there are some out there that think Auckland FC's nickname is The Port, and that when that say Wellington is the home of football. they are talking about the club, not the supporters group. Just amazingly terrible all around from a branding point of view.
Wow, knocking the rising poppy already. We have finally got another NZ team in the A League, not that long after the Nix were being metric harangued. So what if it is owned by a wealthy patron, it’s not his first investment in New Zealand, and he is a sports fan. The Port is a great name, most Aucklanders will identify with the port and harbour. They are settling in, there will be a few outriders to be sorted, but they are looking a loyal lot already The team has made a great start, marketing is good, attendance better than expected, 2 wins, and about to have the first derby. Bloody fantastic Only thing lacking is a fans forum like this, facebook or twitter have no history trail Hoping for an entertaining game, cant pick a winner

No worries, didn't think you were! :D
I suppose, because I am of the leftwards persuasion, my prejudice is for active support to have a friendly-but-arms-length relationship with the club management, in the sense that sometimes fans will have to publicly stand up against club management decisions. Or, they will want to take decisions/public stances with which the club will not want to be associated. Like: there's no virtue in picking a fight with management on principle. But it is surely best for active support to be in a position whereby, if they get offside with the club, they can't be crippled by the club withdrawing its backing, or conversely damage the club by association.

Agree with you Doloras i like the fact that YF is the unoffical supporters group. Its great having a relationship with the club but the supporters need to be completly independent and able to comment and do what they want within reason and not be scared to call out the club if its felt needed by the fans.

fair points - but there doesn't seem to be any evidence that the Port won't stand against the owners if there is an issue important enough - so I guess we just need to wait and see? It's a bit silly to make judgement without any basis at this point.

Paddy has got that wrong. Is a Devlin interview with the Port elite where they say 4 guys had a beer together and decided to start a supporters group.
Sure they then approached AFC, to form some sort of relationship but it was all kicked off by a small group of football fans, and apparently some of them go back to being fans of the Kingz/Knights
You can see on FB they organise all the Port merch themselves. And punters have had the usual moans about a club like season tickets and jerseys being slow to be mailed out etc. They ain’t bitching much yet about their club but that will come
I reckon part of going Up the P*rt. rather than Up Auckland (bland) is just it’s more fun shortish cool word to say. A bit like Nix is more popular to use than Phoenix
I've always thought of the 'Wellington is the home of football.' stuff to sort of be a rejection of the black knights moniker. As if creating a fan-led set of symbols to identify the club with etc if that makes sense

Pretty sure i never mentioned the Port and had no intention of implying anything to do with them its purely what i think.

fair enough - it wasn't a dig. I think from the outside looking in the balance the Yellow fever have with the club is something to be admired by the way.

You are right. The Port was not dreamed up by the marketing team at Auckland FC. This group was formed before the club had that department.
From what I know (won't claim to be in the know) there has been good lines of communication between the club and Port, with both sides agreeing or disagreeing on certain ways to celebrate a match day. There are a couple of strong leaders in the Port group, who won't be scared of calling the club out if needed. They have not needed to at this stage.
I actually quite like the fan group name "The Port". Certainly a million times better than "The Black Knights" for the team. Makes them, the team, sound like some type of Condom Brand.
I think the Port need to follow the YF example, in that, once they are up and running, move to a independent role, set up their own website etc. Yes, I have said that before, but on this occasion, there is reasoning as I mentioned - "Independent". It will allow them to move in a direction of their own choosing rather than be a mouth piece for the club or being controlled by the club as to what they can say or do.
Judging by the numbers in the crowd, they have more than enough potential to make it all work out.
It is kind of fun watching them grow from nothing to where they are now, just like it was when the Nix & the YF started. Nothing is taken for granted. I'm still buzzing that the Nix are here, especially after 17 years and the trials and tribulations the club and its fans have been through.
