Slater/Kosmina sack Krishna, Velaphi and Singh, win the wooden spoon, with the worst attendances and viewership ratings, Phoenix fold.

Do we go with a Manager with a Pro Licence and Greenacre as the Coach with an assistant. FFA Happy

EDIT: Manager with a Pro Licence and Coaches(Trainers) as we began the league under Terry

IIRC, the requirement wasn't in place until this season.

Is this retrospective or has it a lead time for current clubs?

He was co host pre game and at half time with Martin Devlin and Devlin said a few times he should be coach. Herbert himself seemed to want the job but that ships saled.

Agreed. If anyone craves return to Ricki, he's probably one of those types that keep returning to the same psycho girlfriend / boyfriend as soon as they forget how painful it was towards the end of the previous round.

Ricki was past his time when he manfully quit, and had the guts to recognise it.

I think the Phoenix would be ecstatic if Ernie's second season could be repeated.

Anyway, the Phoenix wanted someone signed before the end of the season but it's all ominously quiet now.

If we don't have a coach in place by season's end, what happens to the players coming off contract? Does someone else decide who to hire and who to let go? This is the best chance we've had in years to have a major revamp of the squad, and really move on some of the players who have just not measured up.
We  need that decision to be made by whoever gets the nod to coach us next year and hopefully lead the Nix to bigger and better things. And perhaps save the club as an A-League entity.

A new name in the mix.  Rob Sherman.

Interesting. I thought it was a lock for Vid. Anyone know Rob Sherman, or had dealings with him?

no but he has his own website

Even more interesting. Has played professionally at a high level, varied footballing background, the right level of coaching badge, and his name has come out of left field at the last minute. Sounds like a serious contender. (Is he living in NZ at the moment?)

well he is NZF's High Performance Director so I'd assume that he's living here

No, he resigned as NZF's Technical Director in January 2016 to be replaced by the current encumbent, Andreas Heraf in 2017.

Rob was giving out the prizes to the Dragons youth team at half time at English Park during the ISPS Handa Premiership match against Team Wellington a week ago.

So, yes he's definitely in the country.

Rob Sherman would be the most experienced coach in NZ at a high level, after Heraf and Schmid.

His CV here:

https://www.linkedin.com/in/robert-sherman-a6590a2...

Technical Director NZF 2014-16; 2007-2008

Advanced Coach Education Manager / Head of Coach Education, Football Federation Australia 2011 - 2014

Canadian Women's Team assistant coach 2011- 2013 (Bronze 2012 Olympics)

National Player Development Manager / Technical Programs Manager, Welsh FA 2001 - 2007

Head Coach Wales u-16 Boys 2000 - 2007 (coached Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey etc.)

Cardiff Regional Coach Welsh FA 1998 - 2001

Not only does Rob Sherman have the UEFA Pro badge, in Wales he was in charge of awarding it:

"At the Football Association of Wales, he introduced a national structure for the development of players, directed and delivered the Coach Education program including the UEFA Pro and A licenses. He also coached the Welsh U16 Men’s team for 7 years, during which time they secured the Victory Shield for the first time since the 1950’s. As part of his role, he represented the FAW within UEFA’s coach and youth development initiatives."

This is my biggest concern. The season ends for the nix in 3 weeks time. Assuming that the players' contracts run until the finals series (just in case we make it) then we have approximately 2 - 3 months to find a manager who can come in and assist with the re-signing of players or letting them go. Otherwise we do exactly what we did to DK and sign a hep of players he cannot/will not use.

Rob Sherman is here, he's highly qualified, he knows the HAL, and he's well respected locally. Hard to pass up someone with his pedigree.

Wouldn't be surprised if all players' contracts ran to the end of the regular season with an 'automatic extension' clause in case the team makes the finals.  In any case, pretty much all players (but Durante I'd imagine) would be looking out for contracts, so it is paramount decisions are made soon by the exact same person who'll be leading the team next season.

None of what happened in the last off season, please.

With less than 6 months to go players are free to negotiate new contracts with other teams - though our NZ players are foreigners and our VISA players aren't fantastic so probably not many other teams scrambling to sign our players coming off contract. Though, it seems, without a coach in place we might not be proactive in trying to sign other HAL players coming off contract.

“Having worked closely with Rob during his time with the FAW, I know first-hand the level of professionalism and skill he brings to all projects he is involved with." - Lennie Lawrence, Ex Middlesborough, Charlton, Cardiff City, Luton Manager

Anyone endorsed by Lennie Lawrence is okay by me to take the Phoenix, speaking as somone born a Charlton Athletic supporter with my mother's breast milk.

Lennie Lawrence - Charlton legend (promotion to old First Div. 1986-90) and one of the original 20 Premier League managers of 1992.

Rob Sherman as Phoenix head coach, Lennie Lawrence as his assistant.

Lennie's still coaching as assistant at Newport County.

A decent standard of currie will be key to their success:

Lawrence: ‘I once took a player I was signing for a curry and he couldn’t eat it, it was too hot for him. I nearly pulled out of the deal, I thought if he couldn’t cope with a Madras, he’s no good for me."

Another interesting angle is that Rob Sherman's son Drew is Academy Director and Technical Director at Brisbane Roar.

In the role since January 2017. So Rob Sherman will have a lot of inside knowledge on the A-League via his son.

Drew is the former Cook Islands national coach and technical director 2015-16 including World Cup qualifying.

https://www.linkedin.com/in/drew-sherman-3a899229/

https://www.oceaniafootball.com/archives-4765/

"Drew Sherman became the youngest UEFA A Licence holder when he earned the coaching badge in 2010, was the Youth Development Coach and Regional Academy Manager at Southhampton Football Club and has previous experience with Everton, Wolverhampton Wolves and Swansea City."

I saw speculation a while back that our new assistant coach would need the same coaching qualifications as the head coach. Anyone here confirm that?

Does the board even exist any more? Phoenix admin is like, 3 people, if I'm right.

My understanding is coach (if not 'strayan) is expected to have a Pro licence.  Assistant an A licence.
