The alternatives are what the press give us - Kevin Fallon and Wynton Rufer. No thanks.

Doesn't have to be based in NZ, bet there's a few ex-pros in Aus who would suit

When you think about it is pretty bizarre, you hire a coaching staff to coach the team who have been in football their whole lives and then have the chairman of the board, Noah Hickey and Sean Gill sign players...none of whom have done anything (basically) in football before the Phoenix.

I think you're confused between the board and the football committee. AFAIK the Phoenix footballing committee makes decisions on hiring.

Found this position description for head coach of the Phoenix when they were recruiting after Ricki left: https://m.sportsrecruitment.com/userfiles/job_pds/9...

It doesn't say who is on the football committee other than Rob Morrison but basically is a substitute setup for a DOF, possibly cheaper as they may not see there is enough to do for a full time DOF.

Sure, but a board doesn't need to have domain experience in an industry, in fact in my experience they generally have limited experience with the industry that the company that they are on the board of operates in. They are also not consulted for day to day operations but do have to approve big things like budget increases. Certainly they aren't going to convene the board for every hire. Rob Morrison is obviously involved, but most of those things will be handled by the footballing committee and I believe that the coach has a seat in that committee. A board just provides oversight and guidance.

Saying that, there is obviously something wrong with the nix and it does feel like there is poison at the club. I remember when Ifill was hired he said the thing that made him want to come was the sense of being wanted by the club, Pignata called him, Ricki called him, Dura called him, and the club made new players feel welcome. They kept going on about the atmosphere at the nix and how it was a very closely knit team. That comradery seems to have disappeared over the last few years.

Maybe it's the new owners, maybe it's the backroom staff, maybe Ernie did it, maybe it's simply the players that tried so hard to be inclusive had their own families and suddenly dinners with the boys wasn't a priority anymore. But that closely knit team culture seems to have disintegrated one way or another. The number one issue that needs to be addressed is not to hire quality but to instill that sense of pride in the team, and to teach the team how to play for each other again.

Tacky.
A 'dawn ceremony' seems a bit out of place
The promise of something 'historic' but vague as to what that is.
Has the previous money making ventures been profitable?

Agree that it's tacky. Dawn Ceremony just makes you think of ANZAC day and unless this is some sort of charity tie-in with the RSA or something it seems an inappropriate use of the phrase.

Come on, really? The Phoenix (i.e. the mythological bird and the club's namesake) is reborn with the rising of the sun.

Ok, maybe I have different associations with it but if I here "dawn ceremony" I automatically think ANZAC day, somber speeches, The Last Post, etc. I know there are other dawn ceremonies - for instance when they shifted the Treaty of Waitangi from Archives to the National Library they had a ceremony at dawn. But I still think the phrase doesn't have positive connotations.

wtf are you going on about ?

The Chamber of commerce is involved.  The are charging a good slab of dough to be there. This will not be a new pair of boots for Nixie. It will be something fairly important.

I give them as much stick as anyone at times but lets at least wait till we have an idea what this is about before condemning them

Local iwi, chamber of commerce, historic significance - I'm going to guess that Taranaki Whanui are joining the WelNix consortium. They might reveal the new strip tok. Dream announcement would be a new stadium and 20 year license, but I won't hold my breath on that one.

I was on about the symbolism of the dawn ceremony.

I was on about the symbolism of the dawn ceremony. I agree with Conan that dawn ceremoney to me always makes me think of ANZAC, but I think I can see what they were aiming for.

Here was me thinking they had asked me to something when all they really want is me to give them even more money.Wouldnt be so bad but they show buggar all appreciation when you do take part in their promotions. ie Football Fund may not have been the most successful promotion in raising money but a simple thankyou for participating would have been nice but nothing.

They will probably give away more tickets than they sell and just expect some of us tragics to actually hand over some cash.

It's not targeted at the fan base but business. Part of the Phoenix mandate is to be the core of a business network.

Word on the street is that it's free to attend the event, just $55 if you wanna be at the sit-down breakfast.

The $55 tickets aren't aimed at tragics, they are aimed at corporates.

The time is a std business/corporate event scheduling. ie Banks, Insurance companies etc have these almost quarterly and get good response (better than after Work/Family time)

Nothing in the email i got suggests any of that Patrick so maybe that word on the street isnt meant for all. However if that is the case just another case of the club seemingly being unable to engage and get their message across to their fans.
