What have Welnix got to sell?... a 1 (likely) + 3 (iffy) + 3 (more iffy) year HAL licence?

Yeah.

Nah.

That's if the people purchasing the club have the intention of keeping the club in NZ. Could just use the club to purchase a spot in the HAL and move it to Australia and get the FFA to give them a longer licence.

If FFA is not interested in giving Consortium "X" (insert Canberra, Hobart, Geelong etc here) a licence on their own merit, the fact that Welnix may sell it to them directly should make no difference to FFA not approving it.

Conversely, if FFA is now talking expansion, there is less reason to buy  a licence off Welnix if one can be got directly from FFA.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Yeah, you're right. Much easier for the FFA just to take our licence for nothing and sell it to another consortium and collect all the $$$

They are talking expansion though

They are; apparently two teams in the following season edition of the league - smells of desperate rearguard by FFA in face of ongoing stirrings among the club owners and FIFA visits.

a 2 (likely) + 3 (iffy) + 3 (more iffy) year HAL licence

(this season is only the 2nd season of the first licence block of 4).

I see the Warriors close to sale at between 20 to 24m. Based on that, where would the Nix be if membership of the A League was confirmed.

So I was right - they are holding on until there is change in the A League and the club is worth some money.

I don't have much sympathy for him and the owners for their moans and groans - they could do a lot better with running the club than what they are.

You don't have to be a brain surgeon to know that was what he was alluding to. You've fallen for all his fluff about how he is hemorrhaging money and how they bought the club to keep it in Wellington etc and you've been distracted from the truth. 1. That being that they are holding onto the club until the A League model changes and they can get the best price for the club. 2. That they are fudgeing useless at running the club. 3. They have come up with all the excuses under the sun for the teams poor performance except their own ineptitude. I know it might destroy your chances of free cocktails in the Director's lounge, to admit that.

He really made it clear that the Nixs are a deadbeat club until if/when the changes at FFA happen. Just hope FIFA do there job and clear up the FFA arrangement with the A-League clubs.

Have we got a clear coherent run down on CCM in that thread from you. Or are they making friends in the FFA.

EDIT: Gareth is as hes says a "Reluctant Owner"  he has for some years now. But stays involved because they stay to save it for Wellington.  Cost neutral is all the Clubs want.

Think it was pretty obvious what Gareth was alluding to and to pretend otherwise is really just a case of denial. Lets face it Gareth lost interest in the Phoenix along time ago and has moved on to other things. Think it would be more worrying if other members of Welnix started expressing similar thoughts on the record.

Yep i might also be in denial but prefer to have some faith in others in Welnix because i fear any other alternative  may mean we lose what we have even a badly performing Phoenix is better than the alternative of having NO Phoenix.

Not exactly an inspiring interview.

If this is what’s coming from an owner on public record I’m not surprised that half the time the players don’t look like they care.

It was certainly no " We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be,we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender"

We all know what Gareth is like, the Australians may not, but we do. I'm surprised he hasn't said things like that before.

He's not the sort of person to allude to anything, he'll say it outright so I'm inclined to take what he says on face value which is about what you'd expect.

Quite clear from Gareth's interview he at least wants out as a owner and is waiting the right oppurtunity. Not happy about his investment.

How many of the others do also in the Welnix group.

The concern now would be the ownership group selling the licence to an Australian based investor or investors. I think that is far more likely than finding a NZ based new owner/ownership group.

But Gareth did remind us of the behind-the-scenes moves to take the HAL away from FFA, and give control to the clubs, and of Rob Morrison's leadership in trying to make that happen. I belief that's our best chance of a secure, and brighter future. And who knows, maybe a second HAL team at some stage.

He says:

1. He's a reluctant owner and it costs a lot of money

2. He doesn't want to fold it because he bought it to stop it from folding

3. He want's the league to reform to make it fairer for the Phoenix but he's thinking that reform is going to be incremental.

4. The Phoenix are on the market as are all A-League teams, he indicates he'd sell to a consortium of overseas investors like Man City.

5. He doesn't think the license will be renewed unless something changes.

6. The goal is for the Phoenix to break even but that's a tough ask.

All pretty obvious things.

Given the jerkish things he did during the election (and after, eg gloating about the death of the PM's cat), the sooner Gareth Morgan in particular stops part-owning my football club, the better.

I think Gareth has a habit of saying what he thinks without thinking through how they will be interpreted, he probably wasn't being insensitive in his own mind and definitely went on a Trump like tirade at the media for skewing his intentions afterwards. But, a lot of people associate the Phoenix with him negatively, a lot of people think he's the sole owner because he's a publicity hound and the others are more reticent. It would be nice if he was more taciturn but he's not and so his relationship with the Phoenix does hurt the teams brand.

But, if there's no one else and he's writing cheques then who am I to complain.

so we angst at Dome not being up front and honest - but think Gareth is a dick for doing so?

Not a lot of hope coming  out of that interview

Interesting.  I thought the other owners had put the skids under Gareth for most of the reasons that interview reveals.  Guess he talked his way into staying.

Meh. I'll listen when Rob says it.

Gareth's hardly been involved in the running of the club.

I'd suggest that Rob is far more circumspect than old Gareth and I know who I think you're most likely to get the truth out of [however painful it might be for you Patrick and others].

This requires starting wit the assumption that Gareth actually knows what the truth is.

I think Rob probably shares a lot of the same thoughts, the points Gareth raises are all pretty much in line with what has always been said apart from the fact that he's a reluctant owner.

What WelNix have said, and what even the above interview has not contradicted is they bought the Phoenix for Wellington and they want it to be self sustaining.

If Rob was not committed to the Nix long term why would he be jetting off to FFA headquarters regularly to discuss  APFC plans for the future(Most likely at his cost). Also why would the APFC have him as a major part of the group if they did not want Wgtn in.

Easy to ask questions to get the info to back anyone's slant on a topic. Just ask the RBB :-)

Because apparently if FIFA steps in and forces the FFA to relinquish control, and if the Phoenix are then granted the same license as the other clubs, and if there is a buyer then whatever paltry sum the club is worth makes all this risk and effort (not to mention ten years worth of accrued losses) worthwhile.

Need to put up one:

Footballers urgently required.

Can kick a ball in the net or use your head. Go for 90+ minutes. Can stare at the opposition like John McKain and happy to seamonster the odd Robbie Kruse.
