He re-signed with the Jets.

Looking at the players coming off contract in the A-League, there really isn't many left I would want. We have a solid squad to build on, we need to find the class to bring us to the next level with our visa spots.

What visa spots? We might have one if Sanchez gets the boot. But Ifill is booked in, and sounds like Greenacre and Smith will be as well.

Article I posted earlier about Brockie, suggest they are going to stay with 5 visa spots for next season. So far we have only Ifill signed up, so there are still 4 until people put pen to paper.

Fair enough. Missed that one. That's good news then.
Still think that Smith and Greenie (as a player) will stay though. Not so sure about Sanchez. Greenie does a hang of a lot of running around up the front to cover up for Ifill who does very little. Would be good if he could find the back of the net a bit more though.

Ifill, Smith, Sanchez - wouldn't mind them staying. Warner will go,and with Greenacre possibly stepping aside leaves 2, if he continues playing, then 1.

So there is room to move there.

I am not sure Sanchez is going to stay, over Xmas he was playing great and we were in contract talks. Since then he has been pushed out to the wing, and haven't been any mentions regarding the contract extension.

I'd like him to stay as an option to play centrally for when brown is gone next season.

Opinion does seem divided about him,but I quite like him playing there.

If we are actually going to sign a foreign striker with some pace then greenacre will need to fall on his coaching sword and chuck it in. AucklandPhoenix2012-04-02 19:41:58

I think they need to tel him - look we are gonna go out and find a gun striker 5 years your Junior, and if we are successful in finding him, we may need you to continue only with the coaching, with potential as injury replacement during the season.

I'm not sure Sanchez will stay. He's openly admired the way Roar play; I think he'd prefer a team based more on passing the ball than hitting it long.
If we play him central attacking midfield I'd be happy for him to stay.
If he's on the left then I'd rather he left.

For the bench man. He can play the wing or striker.
He's probably to expensive for that but meh.
If we had the full salary cap + a marquee could be feasable.

Greenie hasn't really scored enough goals this season justify an foreign spot for next season.
He provides a lot more than goals but I'm looking forward to having him in a dedicated coaching position.

please let us keep Sanchez. One of the reasons we are in the finals- and more important with Brown retired. They run the same channels...

Sanchez, Lia, Smith in the Mids and Lochy and Manny down the flanks gives us something with Daniel/Ward/Pav/gun pacy forward and wide player, Ifill, Leo up front...

needs squad depth!

We DON"T need a creative midfielder because we do not play that style of football. Absolutely pointless IMO. Ricki is not going to suddenly change his style in year 6. We need to look at how we play and select the best players to implement that style. Forget wet dreams of creative midfielders.

I think what some people think they mean by creative midfielder - is a midfielder who:

1) is comfortable on the ball
2) has good vision
3) can distribute the ball
4) minimizes turnovers

Someone like that would suffice - Ward ticks all of these except for #4 where he is prone to some serious lapses, Daniel of a couple of years ago - and sanchez in patches this year- ago have been reasonable in all of these areas,  Lia's weaknesses are #3 and #4, however I thought his game against Sydney was one of his better games, and Brown biggest weakness is #1.

sounds like smith to me.
Sanchez does possibly have the best touch of the midfielders. Manny and Ifill are magic in that area. Pav is how not to do it.

Ah yes Smith,  I've thought he's done well when he's been given a run.

But when I hear creative midfielder, I want someone with an x-factor and some flair. Smith doesn't have that. He's not the creative midfielder we need to mastermind our attack.

I agree, to me "creative midfielder" means umm, I dunno, a midfielder who creates chances... Smith is good at controlling the play from midfield but he's not the sort of player who will pop up and play that killer through ball, or beat a player to create some space, or knock a first-time backheel that catches the defence napping. I still think that if Sanchez was played centrally he could do that, especially if Brown is gone. I think a midfield of Lia, Smith, and Sanchez looks very well balanced - ballwinner, distributer, creator - with Ifill and Bertos/Pantelis playing wide and a new gun striker up front

edit: assuming Manny still at RB, otherwise he would replace Lia in that lineup

If that means the same thing as "an aura", I think Kewell might be free.

I think the key is chance creation from one of our midfielders. Alex Song for Arsenal is a defensive mid with more completed through balls this season than any other premier league player, and doesn't get near being called a 'creative midfielder'.

None of the midfielders on the books are consistently attributed with setting up our players, and that's what we need.

The man for the job? McGlinchey. But it'll be a hard sell nabbing him from CCM.

I also think we need a creative spark in the midfield, but it doesnt have to be in the classic number 10 mould.

I also think our lack of mobility in the final third wouldnt always give the attacking midfielder many options? Our guys dont seem to make too many intelligent runs unless there is acres of space to run into.

Another great point, pace up front (which RH has identified is needed) should hopefully counter this.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/6696490/Paston-has-fingers-crossed-for-Phoenix-contract

The veteran goalkeeper is off contract at the end of the A-League finals and despite Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert indicating he would like Paston to extend his stay in Wellington, an offer has yet to arrive.

"I haven't had anything put in front of me so it's hard to say `yay' or `nay' to something that's not there yet," said Paston in Sydney where the Phoenix are preparing for Saturday's minor semifinal against the Glory in Perth.

"It would be fair to say the clock's ticking on that one. I've got a family to look after and at some point in the next week and a half I've got to make a decision in the best interests of them. I'm enjoying it in Wellington but it obviously needs to be right for both parties."

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/6696474/Even-the-bus-driver-helps-out-at-the-Phoenix

"Herbert has coached the team by himself after assistants Jonathan Gould and Luciano Trani fled for Perth and Adelaide respectively.

With the Welnix consortium ensuring the club's finances are now in good health, it is understood the highly regarded Gould will return to Wellington to work with goalkeeper Glen Moss and Co next season."

Is it not a slap in the face for Mark Oates who has been filling in as Goal keeping coach that Gould is coming back?  Did Mark apply for the job?

Isn't he a full time teacher? He might not be interested in a full-time coaching role. Just a thought.
