If we had Felipe back, would that add to our current strength??

NO!

Will we be improved enough this year with just our new signings Bertos and Hearfield added to our known quality of Smeltz and Daniel??

Depends on your expectations.

I think the current squad is good enough to compete for a top 4 spot but, I think to be title contenders, we need another very good striker.

We are also very exposed to, god forbid, an injury to Smeltz - which I guess is why Tony P indicated recently he was looking for two more strikers.

At the risk of being greedy a specialist right back wouldn't go amiss either.

I share the previously expressed concern that we have lost time on the "Porter saga". If we want two strikers I would like to have seen one signed up by now.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Felipe would just give us more of what we already have - attacking mid type players - hopefully the ones we have now will be more consistent

We also have to think about the possibility that Smeltz wont hit the same kinda form. Second season blues and all that.

He'll probably get marked a little heavier this season, as he's a known quantity but that then leaves room for the less known players in the squad, Geo, Bertos etc.

Queenslander 3x a year.

Looks like we don't have Porter. Suprise.

If only we could grab Trent McClenahan:

Player Profile

He's a Right back, he's an Aussie Under 23. He might not be staying at his club and would consider the A-League...

Probably not, of course - he'll probably stay in England and we're probably not signing any more defensive players anyway... but I can live in a dream world where we have a real Right Back can't I? :(

Hey Daniel,

Thanks for posting here and giving us a different perspective.

I think where our point of view comes from is based on some of the Pools forums. They seemed to indicate that Danny Wilson didn't rate/like/ had fallen out with Porter and with that in mind it was very unlikely that the option would be taken up.

Do you know anything about that?

Wilson has been a big problem. If I could hazard a bet...If Neale Cooper was in charge I don't think Porter would have considered leaving us.

Porter has been excellent but he has been in and out of the team.

Having said that, Wilson would have been thick to get rid of Porter as he is a fan favourite and we have 3 strikers (one of them was none league one a half seasons ago and is still learning and one of them is knocking on a bit and suffered with injuries a lot last season)

Wilson has always been coy about contract renewals in interviews. It's always been a case of "wait and see". Judging by our release list we've either released really poor players or youth team members. So I don't think Wilson had any intention of releasing Porter and if I am correct he did say to Radio Cleveland that Porter "is very much part of my plans" as soon as the Wellington rumour surfaced.

Whether Porter is in Wilson's first team plans is another question and is the one that probably made Porter want to leave (other than he misses home).

Darren Huckerby should be looked at - realistic option especially if he is considering MLS

I see Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink might be leaving Cardiff. Surprised nobody's chucked his name into the hat yet.

Is Huckerby an out and out striker tho? I thought he was more of a wide player. Haven't seen him ages but he used to be pretty decent.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Wiki P (believe the source or not), describes him as "...  a winger who can also play as a conventional forward."

cant see brosque wanting to or being allowed to leave sydney

not overly excited about getting one of the other a league clubs strikers to be honest

Brosque or Thompson will 100% def not come.  It's probably Santalab or something. (really hope it isn't him. he scored 2 great goals but he's an a grade t**ser)

Huckerby looks OK!

How long a shot is he?

Agree hard to get excited about a striker from another A-League club. Anyone half decent will never be let go. Everything has gone a bit quiet on this front...no doubt the Phoenix mangement are working their butts off trying to solve this problem.

Mrja or kwasnik??? marinators are overloaded with attacking options, hows one of them for a possiblity?

Huckerby was linked with Liverpool in his prime. He was a legend at Norwich....apparently he was rather good.

Mrdja is good but is always injured. Kwasnik is average.

He needed the higher salary, his food bill was significantly larger!

I heard El**ch got part payment in Big M vouchers, perhaps someone can clarrify that? JFH showed on the FA Cup final he's still got the fitness. A season here would be worth it but only if the wages were not ridiculous.

Had a Scottish man here on holiday tell me Celtic won't be extending Chris Killen's contract and that he will be looking to come to Wellington Phoenix. Seems farfetched but he apparently is close to important people at Celtic.

Pinch of salt I reckon.

Well we are looking for a striker, it doesn't sound that unrealistic. How much would he cost?
Permalink Permalink
almost 18 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History
No chance. Why would he? He could easily get a gig at the championship and even lower PL teams, which is where top A-league players are going...

Because he's bounced around the UK without any significant success and he wants to return to his home town and start again ?

If no other offers were forthcoming, why not ?

Because he can earn significantly more in Europe than we can ever dream of offering him.

If you can't get a job there and the Phoenix are willing to pay Marquee dollars ?

I can't see it being likely as others may want him but if the best option is a return to Oldham, why not ?

I'd find it very hard to believe that he wont be at at least a Championship level next year.

Also, Killen as a B option to Joel Porter?!

I wouldn't get too caught up in A, B and C. If he has just become available go for it.

Plan B might be what we're stuck with.

How about Smeltz and Killen starting with (pick 2) Covs/ Barbs/ Drapes on the bench.

Good enough to make the Nix a top 4 contender?
