I guess paying for it is the issue for some of them. Speaking of trials though, are we looking at another YF Scholarship? Or have i some how missed that this year?

The club announced a while ago it's intention to run it's own.

We'll probably leave them to it I think, although we haven't sat down and actually discussed it properly yet.

We're about to go balls deep into a website redesign (god I hope the club survives) so could be a bit tight for cash for a while.

How would a scholarship run by the Phoenix differ from an ordinary trial?

I suspect the bad press associated with having a player signed from a fans scholarship leave might have something to do with the decision...
pretty much

Anyone been down to see any of the new trialists over these past two days?

Would love some insight into the likes of Sanchez, Travis, Bran, Tsattalios and Kelly??

Good range of guys out there and everyone seemed to have something to offer after Wednesday night's game

Sanchez and Travis look worth a go IMO.

Other ones not so sure yet.

What's the age cut-off for the youth spots?

Ryan de Vries is a kiwi who's banging the goals in for Bentleigh Greens at the moment - just scored his 4th and 5th goals in 4 games, and he's under 20 till September when he turns 20. Haven't seen him play but he played for Waitakere last season and by all accounts has good pace and skill on the ball.

Should the Nix be looking at him for one of the youth spots?

He's trained with the Phoenix quite a number of times over the last few years so he's definitely not an unknown for them.

Did nobody hear ricki talking on radio at lunchtime re signings. By all accounts have a couple of major signings lined up from Europe with one of them almost signed and the other they are still talking to. Also looking for some younger talent in the striker role.

Hopes to have full squad all in place before end of August.

Purhaps piney can confirm it was on ZB I heard it.

Hopefully major signings from Europe doesn't include current European triallists some of whom, by accounts, sound handy but wouldn't strike me as major.

wow cant beleive the lack of speculation happening after that announcement. Surely someone has traced RH's calls and figured out what area of Europe he is calling...

Yeah, it is, so is Turkey, Israel, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Gerogia. I suppose they are (though I think they were in the AFC for a short time?) because they use to be part of the Soviet Union like Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. Not sure why Israel is, might get to much hate in the AFC? bleh?Azevo2011-07-14 01:25:08

I have a feeling (without googling) that the old Soviet countries had some sort of choice over what confederation they fell under - Uzbekistan is in the AFC for instance.

Israel was in the OFC for one or two campaigns in the 80s before being moved to UEFA, it would be too much to ask their national side to regularly go into Iran etc. for a football match, it just wouldn't be worth the politics.

No sign of Nicky T or JVS last evening... I'm kinda hoping they've gone home to get their things in order before moving here permanently?

Whether that's the case or not I have no idea.

No JVS is interesting. Perhaps another club has come in for him? Surely he's the best reverse keeper we could pick up.

I'm sure this was in an interview with Ricki I heard the other day he said that JVS and Travis had returned to Adelaide, I presume Adelaide is where they both live/reside !!!!!

A reverse goalkeeper? Is that someone who methodically knocks own goals in?

The Deloras Dive Technique?

The other day I was playing for our reserve side (as they were playing after the first-team game and all their keepers were away), and our defender just about put a backpass into the net in the first minute of the game. Ask her what the look on my face was, if the memory isn't giving her nightmares.

Isreal became an AFC member in 1956, but was kicked out in the 1970s due to Arab pressure (think they were even Asian champions at one point in the 1960s). They weren't affiliated with any confederation in the late 1970s and 1980s (but they did play-off with Oceania representatives for World Cup spots in the 1980s), and joined UEFA as an affiliate member in 1992, and full member in 1994.

Kazakhstan were AFC members upon independence (affiliates in 1992, full members in 1994) - their FA had a vote on which confederation to join at the time, and AFC prevailed. But later in the 1990s there was shift in thinking within their FA, and they thought joining UEFA would be more beneficial to them in the long-run, and in 2002 they became full members of UEFA.

All the other ex-USSR countries stuck with their original choices upon independence.

Turkey have been members of UEFA since 1962 - and since part of Turkey's territory is actually in Europe, their membership isn't as controversial as some of those other ones.
