This is what I'd like to see for the list below!
Expires 2023/24
Kosta Barbarouses - yes please (2+1)
Jack Duncan - if he wants to stay as a back up (1)
Bozhidar Kraev (V) - yes please (2 or longer)
Nicholas Pennington - sure if the price is right (2)
Youstin Salas (V) - yes please (2 years minimum)
Oskar Zawada (V) - with current injury issues I think we let him go.

I'd like to Surman locked in for longer - if only to make his transfer fee higher.

Starboy stays 🤩🤩.

He’s gonna tear the league up eventually.

Well that's great news for GSR but it's hardly a momentous announcement for us is it?

To be fair - they only promised a signing!

By all accounts a player with a bright future - who if we see a few players move on as expected will have a big role to play moving forward.

3 year deal. Will still only be 19 when deal expires.
https://wellingtonphoenix.com/news/young-history-maker-signs-maiden-pro-contract/

Sloane-Rodrigues put pen to paper on his first pro contract, the first two years of which are on scholarship terms, three months before his 17th birthday.

Very good business by the Nix. Rumours his family & agent were looking at overseas options, and yes he's from Auckland so I'm sure Corica and co had a chat to him & his support network.

But if he half matches the hype about him (I mean that in a kindly way), then the Nix could be in for a nice fat transfer fee. He'll get increased minutes next season. Especially if any of Kosta, Kraev or Old move on. There is also a U20 World Cup next year, to show his stuff on a world stage.

Rollo on Stuff reporting he turned down an offer from Auckland. Huge piece of business from us to knock back a club with the money and promises of Akl to keep such a talented young player loyal - and he'll still be a teenager when this contract ends!

I'm guessing a lot of it comes down to Chief showing faith in young players this season, and for plucking him from the club's 3rd team to start with. GSR goes to Auckland or overseas, and basically he has to start all over again from the bottom.

With the Nix the coaches know him well, and will have made some promises (depending on performance) about mins next season. For all we know his dad (coach in Hong Kong) plus agent, may have quietly made some demands on playing time that the Nix have within certain parameters agreed to.

Plus GSR knows the other players in the squad, as performance benchmarks to get mins next season. Auckland sign some big name marquee attacking players that expect to start each week, and GSR's playing time there could be very limited.

If after a few years (or even a standout starring U20 WC), he knows the Nix will let him go for a fee if a big money overseas offer comes in. But for the next 3 years & his continued development, he needs to be playing as much as possible. The big money deals can come after age 19!

https://wellingtonphoenix.com/news/young-history-maker-signs-maiden-pro-contract/

Sloane-Rodrigues will become the seventh player to graduate from the academy into the first team since Giancarlo Italiano took over as head coach.

“It’s difficult for a coach to have that much faith in young players, but it’s been working.

“He trusts his young players and it makes us more confident.

“He always tells me he doesn’t care if I make mistakes as long as I keep working hard and don’t put my head down.”

He started training with the first team during pre-season after
Italiano spotted him playing for the Phoenix thirds in the Capital Premier League.

“I felt as though he had a little bit of x-factor about him,” Italiano said. “He was doing things different to what the other players were.

“He was taking on players, dribbling, switching the ball on the run and I just felt like he had a point of difference, and I liked it.

“When he first came into training he showed the same thing which I saw in the game so that gave me a lot of confidence.”

Giancarlo Italiano believes the step up to professional football will be “a big jump” for Gabriel Sloane-Rodrigues but he has the “potential to be a real point of difference for us”.

“He needs time, but after two years in this environment he’ll be flying.

“I would like to see him build gametime next season…a bit like how Oskar van Hattum has progressed this season. I see that sort of trajectory for him.

“Once he scores and he gets a bit of belief I think he can do really well.

“I also
want to see him make the next national team for his age-group.”

Sure it's a good option to sign one of our acadamy grads, I've only seen his limited miunutes for the first team - which have been decent enough. I guess I was hoping for a big name re-signing like a Kraev or Kosta deal - now that would be massive!

If he is as good as "they" say he is, then a three year deal is a bargain when the first two years are on a scholarship basis.  I only ever saw his sub appearance some weeks ago, but others claim he is a promising player - and we know how we did not get the best value out of Rojas by letting him go early. Lessons learned.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

That's great news and exciting for the future of this team. Developing young players has worked very well for us in recent years.

Smart kid. Knows Corica doesn't play kids.

If we can keep Kosta and Kraev another year that'd be a good start.
Would be really keen to see if we can extend Surman in particular, plus Hughes and Sheridan for another year at least.

looking at the singings into 25/26 we have a solid group of young guns,
both Kelly-helads, Paulsen, Old and now GSR, 24/25 has another group opf up and coming younger players with Rufer in there as well - the future is looking pretty good as long as we can keep Italiano around or at least a manager who wants to continue the youth developmnent programme.
Getting a couple of decent older heads on a longer term contract would be good too

"Sloane-Rodrigues was invited to train with the Phoenix first team in pre-season after coach Giancarlo Italiano stumbled onto one of his games for the Phoenix’s thirds in the Capital Premier League and liked what he saw."
I was at that game ;-) He was good, you could see that he's better than the rest of the players on the field.

Be interesting to see if Duncan is let go, and Alby Kelly-Heald is promoted to be back up keeper, behind Paulsen.

Guess all depends what happens with AP himself the next few months up to the Olympics. No doubt he's on the radar of some overseas clubs.

Cantabarian Matt Foord from last year's NZU17s, who's now with the Weenix also looks a good prospect.

Theres no way Paulsen stays behind this season I reckon. Hes the one I'd be confident we'll be getting offers for from our young guns. Old and Surman the other two I can see being sold but I also think another season for both of them wouldn't be the worst thing for them too.

If Auckland FC identify any serious training facility shortcomings at Albany, I'm pretty sure Foley's cash will rectify that.

Plus they have the top class Millennium Institute very nearby, that often accommodates professional sports teams.

Would be very interesting to see what Paulsen decides to do, we have him on contract through next season, so any purchase would come at a cost. Is AKH ready to be the back-up keeper? is he ready to be the #1 if Duncan and Paulsen leave?

If Paulsen leaves, Chief will want a replacement with good feet. Otherwise would need to be quite a big tactical shift to how the team currently plays.

Getting Tzanev over from the UK (if he was interested) wouldn't be the worst idea. Experienced and spoken about as someone that likes to be a bit of a sweeper keeper. The Bulgarian Kiwi needs to be the starting GK somewhere soon, to have any hope of making the 2026 WC squad.

If both Duncan and Paulsen leave, the club would sign another keeper. AKH is good but not good enough yet to be starting at A-League level - although I think he can definitely be the no.2 next season with a good Central League under his belt.

didnt he just extend until 2027? Would be a good offer to break that contract. I think he stays another season personally.
almost 2 years ago · edited almost 2 years ago · History
Yeah, Paulsen is on contract until the end of the 26/27 season (as shown up in the first post)

Hopefully he stays another season, he needs to be playing competitive football rather than bought by an overseas club & just chucked into their Academy system.
I agree, can't see Paulsen leaving. He is still young for a GK, and is #1 here getting lots of game time. Why go overseas and sit on the bench, which will happen if he goes overseas at his age.
Old has shown lately he still has a lot to go before he is the finished product. I think he should stick around as well for his own development. has been brilliant in flashes, but not consistently enough with his quality to move overseas just yet for me. His time will come though.
Surman's probably a different prospect, has been very consistent for a while now. Of the three more ready to move on. Could go to a similar level as Bindon somewhere and get game time.  Whether he wants to just yet is another thing.
